Ontario Premier Doug Ford holds 1st news conference after election win | FULL
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Ontario Premier Doug Ford gave a press conference on Friday — his first since his election victory on Thursday night that saw his Progressive Conservative Party secure another majority government.

The Ontario PCs were elected in 83 ridings as of late Thursday. At least 63 seats are required to form a majority government. In the 2018 election, the PCs won 76 ridings.

Ford garnered over 40 per cent of the popular vote, even though voter turnout was at a record-low.

When asked if electoral reform was needed to better represent the public’s views, he said the system has worked for over a century and was not needed.

The premier expressed his gratitude to all his supporters, and also wished provincial NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and provincial Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca all their best following their resignation from their respective party leadership.

It's easy to win when you control the rules of the game, bribe the media and shutoff the true opposition. Only 43% of the people even voted. New Blue was not allowed into the debates even though they had a candidate in every riding.

Congrats to Dougie for winning a majority government with 18% of the eligible voters. So 82% did not vote for you. Go democracy! Stupid Ontarian’s deserve the tyranny that will follow for being so complacent and ignorant.
For the record, if you don’t believe in this system and don’t participate by at least officially declining your ballot, these political parasites will claim authority to force you to comply with their “Agenda” regardless of its morality by virtue of the “demoncratic” process. Hold on tight. Get ready for digital ID’s and social credit score system. Digital prison now awaits all of us. You will comply!!

Lowest voter turn out, I believe it. This election did not have much of anything of interest really. Although Doug ford picking up unions, well this was interesting. Over the next four years for any reason Doug does not keep his word, or his promises made to Unions, in the next election it will be a lot different in terms of votes, majority government and turn out that we all can agree on. For now though we all wait, watch, listen and see what in fact this PC government will do for all the people of Ontario, in the private and public sectors and what he will not do?

Why did the reporter ask the question how Ford plans to prevent the inflation the u.s is experiencing as if Inflation isn't already effecting Canadians let alone Ontario.
Did I miss something? Do people in Canada think we don't have an inflation crisis right now?

Guys gonna ignore ODSP recipients again

I guarantee you'll see a bunch of suicides and homelessness from those on ODSP.

Most of us didn't choose to be disabled nor are our cities favorable for those with disabilities to traverse.

Its either you live in a major city and be dead poor yet be able to somewhat traverse or go to a small city pay a bit less but have no way around the city.

Its a lose lose situation with no where near enough support for us to turn things around…literal criminals are treated better ffs.

We don't live in an actual democracy. The results have nothing to do with how people voted. That's why we need a new voting system, proportional representation (% of vote = % of seats), but he didn't answer that question because he cares more about his job than actual democracy where our vote counts.

With continued inflation, and the associated increase in cost of living, 5 per cent is not nearly enough of a rate increase to survive," ISAC wrote. "We call on this government to double both (Ontario Works) and (Ontario Disability Support Program) rates, and to index these rates to inflation."
The recent provincial election campaign saw the Progressive Conservatives promise to raise Ontario Disability Support Program rates by five per cent and introduce legislation to tie annual increases to inflation.
ISAC said that proposal amounts to $58 extra per month for ODSP recipients and doesn't account for the 458,000 low-income people who receive support through Ontario Works.
Social assistance rates have been stagnant since 2018, with a single person able to receive up to $1,169 a month on ODSP and $733 on OW — well below the poverty line.
ISAC said record-breaking inflation rates have driven costs up so high that it's "impossible" for social assistance recipients to pay for basic needs, including housing, food and medication.
The letter was addressed to Premier Doug Ford, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy and Social Service Minister Merrilee Fullerton, and signed by more than 200 non-profits that advocate for poverty reduction and income security. Signatories include legal clinics, health organizations, social service providers and community groups.
The government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Bethlenfalvy was asked earlier this month if the government would give the program a boost larger than five per cent in light of the high inflation rate. He didn't directly answer, saying the government has many tools to fight the rising cost of living.
Other political parties had pledged larger increases to the disability support program during the spring election.
The Green Party of Ontario had proposed doubling the payment rate and Leader Mike Schreiner wrote to Ford last month asking him to make the same commitment.
Schreiner repeated his call in light of Monday's open letter, saying it's "shameful that people with disabilities are forced to live in legislated poverty" and describing Ford's planned five per cent boost as an insufficient "campaign gimmick."
"I am urging the premier to listen to advocates and immediately double social assistance rates and tie all future increases to inflation," he said in a written statement. "It would be shameful if he does not provide immediate and meaningful support to those most in need."
