Hundreds of Indonesian people gathered together at a park in Jakarta on August 17, to celebrate their Independence Day with a greasy pole contest known as ‘Panjat Pinang.’
The object of the game is to ascend the slippery pole to reach prizes that hang from the top. Wednesday’s event was the largest celebration of its kind in Indonesia since before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So I'm from Philadelphia and the people of my city were so happy when the Eagle's won the Superbowl that they climbed up street poles, traffic lights, etc. So the city was like okay cool, but we're going to go ahead and grease those poles bc we definitely don't need anyone falling and getting hurt, understandable. That didn't stop people from climbing the poles tho, and it was national news lol. See we're really not that different, we're all people and we all feel the same emotions ❤️
Is there a deeper meaning or symbolism to this tradition?
Is it also a contest to see which team is able to get the most flags in a certain amount of time?….
