Trump’s tariffs go global as US president now appears to target sales taxes
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

U.S. President Donald Trump fired a shot across the bow with a warning to rivals and allies alike.

Trump, who has largely gone after Canada, Mexico and China, now says he’s targeting everyone.

Trump now appears to be going after sales taxes like the GST or Europe’s Value Added Tax (VAT). Even though his tariff threat is now global, his obsession with Canada continues.

Global’s Touria Izri reports.

what economic illiterate is advising Trump if he thinks sales taxes work like tariffs? The same tax is levied on a good whether it is produced in the US or domestically. How scared of a bond strike is he if he thinks getting goods and services in exchange for American debt is now a bad deal for the US and is so scared of losing reserve currency status?

President Trump is an enacting tariffs partly to encourage companies to build manufacturing plants in the USA. If companies manufacture in the USA there won't be any tariffs for that company. This will strengthen the US economy with more tax revenue and job growth. The key challenge for companies moving production to the U.S. is balancing labor costs while maintaining competitive prices. Here are several potential solutions:

    1. Automation & Advanced Manufacturing

Companies can offset higher labor costs by investing in automation and robotics, reducing the need for a large workforce while maintaining efficiency.

This approach is already used in industries like automotive manufacturing.

    2. Tax Incentives & Subsidies

The U.S. government could offer tax breaks, grants, or low-interest loans to companies that manufacture domestically, helping offset higher labor costs.

Special Economic Zones (SEZs) with reduced tax burdens could be created to attract manufacturers.

    3. Wage Structuring & Apprenticeship Programs

Companies could implement tiered wage structures, starting workers at competitive but sustainable wages while offering long-term career growth.

Expanding apprenticeship programs could provide a skilled workforce at lower starting wages, improving efficiency over time.

    4. Supply Chain Optimization & Domestic Sourcing

Shortening supply chains by sourcing materials domestically reduces shipping and import costs, helping counteract labor expenses.

Using vertically integrated supply chains (e.g., producing components in-house rather than relying on imports) can improve efficiency.

    5. Product Design Adjustments

Companies can redesign products to be more modular, easier to assemble, and require fewer labor-intensive processes.

Apple, for example, could shift to simpler product assembly lines requiring fewer workers.

    6. Regional Manufacturing Hubs

Companies could establish plants in lower-cost U.S. regions where wages are lower than major metropolitan areas.

States like Texas, Tennessee, and South Carolina have attracted automakers and tech manufacturers with lower labor costs and business-friendly policies.

    7. Reshoring Some, Not All, Production

Companies could keep high-tech, high-margin products in the U.S. while still outsourcing lower-value components.

Apple, for example, could manufacture key components in the U.S. while assembling lower-cost parts elsewhere.

    Conclusion

The best solution is likely a combination of automation, tax incentives, supply chain efficiencies, and strategic product design.

While U.S. labor is more expensive, productivity and automation can help offset the cost, making domestic manufacturing more viable.

  18. @rizmacadillac says:

Do you mean "sales taxes" or VAT or "value added tax". I'm not sure how various countries calculate tax on added value… if I ship a bumper to America and it comes back as part of a car for example… But this is an interesting concept and I will have to study to learn if it hurts America as would a Tariff. Congratulation on Trump for noticing this. Keeping America first is important. I will mention that it is my understanding – at least in the UK – that VAT applies to Domestic production and not only imports. So the VAT is added whenever a company improves a product. I am not an expert and won't pretend to be, bit VAT applies to Domestic Production in the UK so far as I know. A VAT is added at certain stages of production. As to the Trump Tariffs, apparently Trump is looking for revenue to help reduce the budget deficit and such which I suppose means he is doing something to help the Deficit/Debt situation. I don't know if I could come up with a better plan or not and I definitely do not want to predict how a trade war will turn out with all of the Global Variables. New Technology, innovation and all can be random but I am sure America will find a way to thrive. A great American President – Teddy Roosevelt – once spoke of "the man in the arena" who is taking the hits and fighting the fight. Trump has been elected to be the man in the arena by the American people. I definitely have been shy about politics in recent years. I got involved when I was younger but I had the impression that some politicians might be hurting me and ripping me off and I just don't want to go into details. I definitely know money is important in politics and realize it is a very real and important occupation. America once earned 100% of it's tax revenue from tariffs but I won't say anything about Trump's program because I'm not in that arena. Americans don't want me, they voted for Trump.

As a Canadian I feel bad for Americans because they will be the ones footing the bill with the world wide tarriffs. No one will want to trade with the US.

  22. @jermaineanderson967 says:

Considering American money is worth a lot more in other countries I look at it like this why should an American be allowed to go to another country and be paid 1/2 or 1/3 times more than that country's residence receive America is a joke that buried themselves in trillions of dollars in debt even destroying the twin towers and the Pentagon office wasn't enough to erase the debt only the trail so basically America is in such debt they expect the world to get them out of it

  23. @Fudmaster-g2m says:

A tariff is a tax on imports, while the VAT is simply a tax on all domestic consumption, regardless of where the good or service is produced.

Ultimately, the final cost—or economic burden, to be more precise—is borne by the consume.

For example, the standard rate of VAT in the UK is 20% and it is levied regardless of whether a product has been imported from overseas or not.

Globally, 175 countries have a VAT system, with the US

being one of the few exceptions, using a sales tax system by state.

  24. @NaaneVinu says:

If US wants to manufacture in US, then let US get its raw materials from US only. The global south should restrict its raw materials to US to protect their business.

It can't be like GS sends raw to US and gets final product back.😊

Trump is the most shameful President of America. All the Presidents of America who made America great considered Russia an enemy of America, probably were no worse than Trump, the reasons were terrorism, political murders, they did harm as much as they could, propaganda against America. And now Trump is either Putin's agent or a lover, ready to kiss Putin passionately, he has recruited the same FSB agents to his team.

Governor trumpy does not realize VAT is not a real tax. It is refundable when the dealer files the VAT tax return. It applies to all cars or other products no matter where they came from. The final customer pays the fina VAT.
