Doug Ford hits US with 25% electricity tax, threatens complete “shut off” if trade war escalates
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Ontario government has officially applied a 25 per cent surcharge on all electricity exports to three U.S. states.

The additional tax, effective on Monday, will affect 1.5 million homes and businesses in Michigan, Minnesota and New York — costing up to $400,000 per day, the government said.

“Until the threat of tariffs is gone for good, Ontario won’t back down. We’ll stand strong, use every tool in our toolkit and do whatever it takes to protect Ontario,” Ford said. “If the United States escalates, I will not hesitate to shut the electricity off completely.”

The move is part of Ontario’s initial suite of retaliatory measures against U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods. Ford previously told media on Friday that he would still be moving forward with the U.S. electricity tax on Monday, even with a temporary tariff reprieve on many products put in place by the U.S. until April 2.

Ford said he would be tough against tariffs. So far he has capitulated to Trump.

Canada: We put a 250% tariff on some US products. ITs ok because it protects our business
Trump puts 25% tariff on some Canadian products….
Canada: ZOMG! Trumps a tyrant. Ahhhhhh, america is opressing us. Help help we are being opressed!. Its terrible.

Again, shown by Ford backing down from a brief meeting with USA, it is painfully evident Canada indeed has no leverage albeit they think they do.

Ford let us down. He talks a good game. But the bottom line is you go visit the Americans and start negotiating. You don't automatically give up on the tariffs that you imposed.

You guys can’t afford to place a tariff on electric, your already 53 billion in the hole.

  14. @darlataylor7537 says:

Most Americans get their electricity from the US. Canada has put max tariffs on the US for decades but now that the US is tired of being USED and ABUSED, Canada is crying about being greedy. Canada isn't the only country abusing tariffs toward the US. Turn off the electricity!!! Small windmills and generators can provide electricity. Be fair about tariffs on both sides or suffer.

Michigan get less than half a percent of electricity imported in from Canada. Michigan regulator said residents would see little to no increase. The Utility companies purchase the electricity, than distribute to its customers. Americans don't pay foreign country for electricity, it's all regulated by the states.

  21. @lennybuttz2162 says:

You know this has no impact on the government it only effects the people. You're trying to penalize the people of America because our president want you to pay a fair tariff and steel and aluminum which you already stated that you will pass on this cost to the consumer. This tariff doesn't effect Canada because they're just going to pass it on. Now you want to punish the American people by charging them more for electricity? Wait, and you say we can still be friends? Hmm do I want to be friends with someone who wants to punish me for no actual reason at all except you're annoyed at someone else? NO I don't want to be your friend. I want America to provide it's own electricity to it's people and stop buying it from you so you can figure out another way to replace the billions of dollars in revenue that you lost for being vindictive.

  22. @lennybuttz2162 says:

To me the answer is simple stop sending steel and aluminum to Canada and build our own electric plants so we can stop paying them for electricity and they can lay off 10,000 people because there is no work and they can find another way to replace the loss of 100 billion American dollars.

  23. @littledestroyers says:
