Canada will fight U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs with targeted countermeasures, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday.
“It’s essential to act with purpose and with force, and that’s what we will do,” he told reporters ahead of a cabinet meeting to discuss Canada’s response.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing global “reciprocal tariffs” Wednesday, but Canada is not included in the latest round of what could be the opening salvo of the biggest global trade war in almost a century.
A White House fact sheet released shortly after Trump announced the policy in the Rose Garden said existing tariffs on Canada and Mexico “remain in effect” — including exemptions — “and are unaffected by this order.”
The existing tariffs on Canada and Mexico were imposed on March 4 under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which Trump says allows him to use tariffs to address a national emergency — in this case, the flow of fentanyl in to the U.S.

Canada should end its long-standing tariffs on our dairy and stop acting like they’re being attacked by the United States. These tariffs were a long time coming and they could’ve been avoided.

It makes no sense that Canada is economically inseparable from the USA but it is not a STATE. It makes no sense that the Canadian Federal government allowed USA flags to be displayed all over Canada, spread American ideology through the Canadian school system and corporate communities, and then claim that Canada is NOT an American State in theory.

Pierre Poilievre has been following Trump's lead for years, and the Alberta Premier, being conservative, shows little concern for the country. She mentioned that Pierre and Trump share much in common. On the other hand, Mark Carney has significant experience in world economics, along with the education to think carefully before acting—unlike Pierre's divisive rhetoric. Canada must take immediate action to establish new agreements with other countries to grow and thrive independently of the U.S. Conservatives will not be able to achieve this, plain and simple. In four years, once the situation has stabilized, we can reassess, but for now, Carney needs to negotiate effectively to navigate us through the economic turmoil that Trump has caused.
