Vancouver’s “darkest day”: Festival suspect charged with 8 counts of 2nd-degree murder
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Vancouver police confirmed on Sunday morning that 11 people were killed and dozens more injured when a man drove an SUV into a crowd at the Lapu Lapu Day festival in Vancouver on Saturday night.

Interim police Chief Const. Steve Rai said the number of deceased could rise in the coming days or weeks due to the extent of the injuries.

“This was a senseless, heartbreaking act of violence,” he said.

“It is the darkest day in our city’s history. The actions of a single person shattered our collective sense of safety.”

The suspect has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder.

No details have been released about the victims.

A memorial continues to grow at the site of the unprecedented tragedy, where a vehicle plowed into a crowd of festivalgoers Saturday evening.

The tragedy — a heartbreaking end to a day meant to celebrate Filipino culture.

Global BC has more on what we know about the victims, the suspect as well as the security concerns being raised.

Si Magellan punot dulo nito. Bakit pa niya ginalit mga Sugbuanon. Is Lapulapu some kinda hero now? Why celebrate? In Canada of all places. Oppressed daw yata yung Lo. May something . American anomie .

All this will turn out to be an NCR case. Not Criminally Responsible! Just like the horrible murder of Tim McLean on a Greyhound bus by Vince Li, who was deemed to be NCR. And Matthew deGrood who murdered five university students in Brentwood, a district in NW Calgary, again NCR. Mentally ill people who murder, should be locked up in a mental home for life for taking another innocent life. It’s torture for families who have lost someone violently to a person like this (who most likely stopped taking their medication) and to know they will be out walking the streets in no time, but their family member is dead. It’s an absolute travesty of justice. If you’re offended by my comment, I’m sorry I hurt your feelings.

that's so sad! authority should not allowed him who has mental problem to have a license to drive any vehicle! 😢😢😢

This was a disaster and such a horrible incident..I assume those street entry ways were not blocked off and this happened towards the end of the event.
The government influence over mental health issues is weak and slow although changes need to introduced but regulation on safety of street events to protect attendees is

Dude ran over and killed a 5 year old kid and both her parents. That doesn't even include all the other deaths and people in critical condition. if he walks then consider your country's justice system a joke.

Heartbreaking 💔 all events should be manned for the worst outcome. An individual with over 50 incidents should have been certified and placed on a high-risk alert. Slipped through the technological system, where it all gets hidden, and the visible concept has been lost.

I'm Filipino and I feel sympathy to our kabayans. Sad to say if someone have mental issue, the killer will be detained in mental facility only and not in prison.

  23. @XandersQuest says:

The purpose of involving the authorities when you’re diagnosed by mental healthcare professionals with a potentially of harm to yourself and others is for them to know that you could be a threat to the community. The problem with our justice system is that, mental illness is now considered as a free ticket to freedom. I believe that mental illness is a thing but it doesn’t mean that it’s a plausible excuse to commit a crime. Authorities should intervene regardless if a person has a mental disorder, if they are a threat to someone’s safety they should be put into a protective custody for everyone’s safety.

To the family of the suspect, you should have known better. I know that you want your son to live a normal life yet, you ignored the fact that he needs treatments to do so. This tragedy should have not happened if you only have given your son the opportunity to be treated accordingly. Mental health exists but so does healing.

The family’s and authorities ignorance is also a part of the crime.

very sad of what happened to the families, but hopefully this tragedy will make change to B.Cs broken mental health system, drug use, crime and violence all dismissed with no charges by the police on street people, i live in Nanaimo and see people on the streets high as F#^% regularly, Also there is no real predicting what people with Schizophrenia have going in their heads, some are so cleaver that they act like they are fine when questioned about their health and hours later they go on a crazy rant or act like that person did.

I put it on him. He knew he had a mental illness. He was working with a mental health team, and I'm sure they told him, if he was feeling like harming himself or others to call his team or go to the hospital. Mentally ill people, need to take some resposibility, for their own illness! If your diabetes acts up, you seek help. If your have cancer, you get the proper care. The SAME GOES for MENTAL illness! There are numerous avenues to getting help with mental health in B.C. There is no excuse for this type of behavior! 😡

Why was he NOT HANDCUFFS??? AND THE POLICE NEAR HIM DIDN'T PUT HANDCUFF AT ONCE???? SEEMS THAT POLICE ARE CONNIVANCE WITH THE SUSPECT. HE ALREADY HAD VISITS WITH THE POLICE AND YET THEY JUST LET HIM GET AWAY WITH HIS EVIL PLANS. HE HAS ALREADY A BACKGROUND IF FAMILY ISSUES/PROBLEM YET THE POLICE JUST IGNORED IT. THEY SHOULD have BROUGHT HIM TO A PSYCHIATRIC/PSYCHOLOGIST. HIS MENTAL CONDITION SHOULD NOT BE AN EXCUSE TO LET HIM GO AND GO AROUND AGAIN. HE'S A THREAT TO THE SOCIETY SO HE SHOULD BE JAILED!!!!

  36. @murray-tinasam3895 says:

It should always be about safety! No matter how big or small any event is!!!!!Mental health is at a all time high!

  37. @fujimotochiaki2487 says:

This is very unfortunate. For the families who are devastated, the community as a whole, their supporters, and…

The suspect doesn't have a life sentence, yet? Mental illness is not an excuse. Being a repeat offender shouldn't be taken lightly.

2nd degree are you kidding me, they get in a car they shouldn’t have to begin with due to there refusal to med , episode or not they used a deadly weapon to injure as many people as possible. Murder 1 nothing less for the victims and 2nd degree for the survivors
