Here’s the latest as the Canada Post strike deadline nears
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A looming Canada Post strike is just one day away, with 55,000 postal workers in a strike position as of Friday and fuelling concerns about mail grinding to a halt.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is currently reviewing new proposals for urban and rural carriers – including a 13.59 per cent wage hike over four years. Canada Post says the offer addresses key concerns, however, CUPW has issued a 72-hour strike notice.

If workers walk off the job at 12:01 a.m. Friday, it will mark their second strike in less than six months.

From Langley’s Canada Post depot, Global’s Taya Fast reports on the latest.

Nothing like screwing with someone's old age support cheque. I am receiving my first direct deposited cheque at the end of June. The one for May is due to come in the 📬.
Not a happy camper. Who cares if you have bills to pay. 😡

The federal government must pass a law making Canada Post as essential service that cannot go on strike because people are the end sufferers.

  6. @rebeccabarretto7270 says:

Please do some research. This isn’t a second strike. It’s a continuation from an illegal pause the government imposed. Terrible reporting.

There seem to be no agreement. That signals the end of Canada Post as we know it…

These workers get a 5 minute “wash up” period before their lunch. Are you kidding me???? Their employer is going bankrupt and the majority of Canadians are saying privatize the thing and this is the kind of delusional thinking by the union! If someone mentioned this in the private sector (real world) they would be laughed out of the office!

For the people saying that they're striking again. No, this is a continuation of the strike in November when they were forced back by the government. They were given a raise for YEAR 1 of a 4 year contract. Years 2-4 were never negotiated and the company had 5 fking months to come up with an offer, and didn't.

Also, the big sticking point isn't the wage. It is how they want weekend delivery to be done. The corporation wants to hire a bunch of "temp" workers to fill UP TO 30 hours a week, and not pay them any benefits. Back when I first started, there were workers who worked for canadapost for over 5 years and never reach permanent full time despite working 40 hrs a week for years on end. Eliminating benefits for temporary workers would just allow the corp to keep these employees temp forever and expose this loophole.

Also they want to eliminate flyer pay, which could be 5-10% of a carriers annual salary. So the wage that the company is offering is actually TERRIBLE when you factor in that cut in their offer.

All in all, the carrier position pays about 65k a year, at TOP RATE which takes 7-8 years to get to(STARTING 53k), sacrificing our bodies walking 20 THOUSAND STEPS a day. It's not as cushy of a job the public thinks it is.

These workers should be protesting against their predatory unions

    Please tell your reporter “13.59%”.
Is pronounced “Thirteen Point Five Nine Percent”.
    Not “Thirteen Point Fifty-Nine Percent”.
    Must have failed math….

Why do we maintain a monopoly over postal services? Wouldn’t it be more efficient to allow multiple mail carriers to compete, just like in other industries? If postal workers seek higher wages, why not pursue professions like doctors or lawyers—careers that typically require more rigorous education and training? Shouldn’t ambition and effort be rewarded accordingly?

This strike only proves one thing – how delusional the union and its representatives are. You have a failing and bankrupt service yet you’re making ludicrous demands. Your mail service is for junk mail and your courier service sucks. Wake up!!!

  23. @robertfranczak9382 says:

I don't understand why people just can drive to a post office in their community to get their mail get rid of letter carriers problem solved.

I'm not about to pretend I know how Canada Post impacts everyone's life, but they could wholly disappear and with no announcement, it would take me months to even notice. This isn't how I get or pay bills. I will use anything BUT Canada Post to ship or receive parcels because I can track them efficiently if I use FedEx or UPS. The union is deluded but so are the workers. Canada Post workers aren't special. Lots of jobs are physically demanding and require work ot be done outside. You knew that was the deal when you applied. You didn't spend years in school to learn your trade. Congratulations, you can read, walk and drive -so can everyone else. There are a lot of equally qualified people who would love your wages/term/etc as they exist. You're all easily replaceable. Keep this up and you'll find out.

Canada post needs to eliminate the. Political appointed managers and hire professional managers
Parcel delivery. Can use Purolator which is owned by Canada post. Why would you want to go into completion with your self

Btw, that 13% raise that she mentioned, is for over 4 years. Sounds pretty good at first, but over 4 years means a tad over 3% per year, not even normal cost of living raise, let alone what we all know the real increases are w/ the crushing carbon taxes which affect our groceries, gasoline, utility bills and all other retail prices. They also haven't had a raise in some 5 or so years, so…

  29. @patrckdinn7265 says:

Can post has to start talks with other carriers to take over some of can post buisness .probably better to contract out than to keep riding that dead horse .private companies would have dismantled that excuse of a buisness years ago.

What a Shame, Neither side can agree, With all the resources that are at our fingertip, This government will make you suck the bitter salt to the end, Where not in 1950, It's 2025, and People will no longer work for peanuts, things have to skyrocket 🚀 and you want people to buckle under pressure, In my opinion, you have job keep it as long as you have life and the strength in you…Soon all
These options will be out the door, and many will have no jobs to go to, or the whole world will go on strike. Our choices in life leave us with STAND UP💪🏽OR SIT DOWN…

  31. @MrFour4th says:
