Need in-depth study on sea voyage for Hajj pilgrims: govt
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The government will comprehensively study the time and financial aspects of sending Hajj and Umrah pilgrims to Saudi Arabia via sea routes before moving forward with the option, Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar has said.

“This is actually not a new option … We still need to take a range of matters into consideration, including the fact that sea travels tend to take a much longer time,” he informed in Jakarta on Thursday.

He pointed out that Indonesia used to transport its Hajj and Umrah pilgrims to Saudi Arabia by sea, most notably using the Belle Abeto and Gunung Djati ships. However, such sea journeys can take three to four months to complete.

“Today’s ships may be faster, and it should be noted that sea pilgrimage voyages are a real option, but they are more viable for nearby countries like Egypt. Since Indonesia does not share this geographic privilege, it is important for us to first study the option,” Umar emphasized.

The minister informed that several companies have approached the government and offered to contribute to the Hajj and Umrah plan, adding that they intend to rent ships from third parties.

“Many companies have come to my office presenting their ideas. However, they do not have ships yet,” he pointed out.

He also highlighted that a small number of Indonesians have indirectly traveled to Saudi Arabia by sea to perform Umrah.

“These pilgrims typically fly to nearby countries and then continue their journey by ship to the Holy Land. Their number, however, remains insignificant,” he said.

Earlier, on Tuesday, he noted that the Indonesian and Saudi Arabian governments have initiated talks on transporting Hajj and Umrah pilgrims via sea routes.

He underlined that the option would allow pilgrims from countries in Asia, including Indonesia, to access the Holy Land through ports such as Jeddah, without relying solely on flights.
