Indonesia’s ministry, diplomats team up to expand migrant job markets

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Ministry for Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) met with senior diplomats in Jakarta on Monday to discuss ways to enhance protections and expand job opportunities for Indonesian migrant workers abroad.

The meeting was led by P2MI Deputy Minister Christina Aryani and attended by three deputy ambassadors and seven consul generals preparing for overseas postings, according to a statement from the ministry.

Discussions centered on improving coordination in migrant worker placement, data integration, and protection measures, as well as identifying promising sectors and countries for job expansion.

“I ask for your support in conducting market intelligence in your assigned countries and coordinating with us so we can better target specific countries, sectors, and required worker competencies,” Aryani said.

She emphasized the importance of expanding opportunities beyond the domestic sector and exploring new job markets for Indonesians abroad.

Aryani also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to integrate migrant worker data on its Peduli WNI platform with the P2MI Ministry’s Siskop2mi system.

“This is already underway. An MoU will soon be signed between P2MI Minister Abdul Kadir Karding and Foreign Minister Sugiono,” she noted.

The harmonized data, Aryani added, would help determine the exact number of Indonesian citizens, including migrant workers, in each host country. This would improve protection services and facilitate better assistance for those facing difficulties abroad.

Judha Nugraha, Director of Citizen Protection at the Foreign Ministry, said the collaboration is part of Indonesia’s broader economic and protection diplomacy strategy.

“This is about opening job markets for Indonesian workers while also ensuring protection through preventative efforts and efficient services by Indonesian missions,” he said.

He confirmed that both ministries are working on integrating their data systems and that P2MI will regulate how job orders are processed through Indonesian diplomatic missions to ensure safer placement practices.

The meeting was attended by deputy ambassadors to Malaysia, India, and Austria, as well as consul generals to Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, San Francisco, Melbourne, Sydney, Toronto, and Ho Chi Minh City.
