“The handover of these fabrics serves as a testament to Indonesia’s consistency in preserving its cultures,” Zon remarked.
According to an official statement cited in Jakarta on Thursday, he presented UNESCO with four culturally significant fabrics crafted by Indonesian designer Edward Hutabarat.
Among the items was a piece of Sawunggaling batik cloth from Central Java, depicting a rooster—a symbol of power.
He also handed over a woven cloth from Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara Province, which took several weeks to produce, thereby reflecting both tenacity and competence.
“Culture is not just heritage but also a form of expression for its people. The motifs found in our fabrics are a language without words, inspiring dialogue and increasing appreciation for Indonesian culture,” he stated.
The four traditional fabrics are set to be displayed at the Indonesia Corner, a dedicated space at the UNESCO Headquarters aimed at raising global awareness of Indonesian culture.
Meanwhile, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Administration and Management, Jennifer Linkins, praised Indonesia’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage.
She said the presentation of the four traditional fabrics sets a positive example for other countries in protecting and celebrating cultural legacies.
Minister Zon’s visit to UNESCO coincided with his role in accompanying President Prabowo Subianto to the 2025 Bastille Day celebrations in Paris.
Before the visit, Zon had met with French Culture Minister Rachida Dati in a dialogue focusing on Indonesia–France cultural relations. The event produced a declaration on cooperation in museum projects, cultural heritage preservation, and the creative economy.
The meeting followed President Emmanuel Macron and Minister Dati’s visit to Indonesia last May.
