In this Thursday’s Mirror Daily Digest, we’ve pulled together the biggest stories of the day – updates in the Jay Slater case to the dangers of online health self-diagnosis

Jay Slater, from Lancashire, was reported missing on June 18, 2024

Welcome to the Mirror’s Daily Digest, where we pull together all the best stories of the day from our News, Showbiz, Sport teams and more. This Thursday we’re featuring everything from updates in the Jay Slater case as the inquest continues, to the sentencing of Brits who smuggled Angel Delight drugs into Bali.

Elsewhere, our Showbiz team have shared the story of how Ozzy Osbourne ‘knew it was over’ when he took to the stage for his final gig, while our Royal team heard from an expert at how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s motives for a royal reunion seem ‘desperate’.

Finally, our Health team heard from a GP about how more people are turning to online self-diagnosis for health issues, and how this is causing a ‘fixation on worst case scenarios’.

Jay Slater’s friend scolded as coroner interrupts inquest

Jay Slater, from Lancashire, was reported missing on June 18, 2024

A key witness in Jay Slater’s inquest has been scolded for making a “political statement”.

Ayub Qassim, believed to be the last person who saw the Lancashire teen alive, gave his condolences to Jay’s family before breaking off to mention “kids dying in Palestine” at Preston Coroners Court today.

Meanwhile Brad Hargreaves, who was with Jay when they visited Tenerife last year, told the court there was nothing that made him believe Hay was distressed, feeling scared, worried or frightened.

When Jay said he was going to an Airbnb with new friends Ayub Qassim and Steven Roccas, Brad told the court: “They were with us for three days so I trusted them as much as Jay I didn’t think anything of it.” In some of the last messages Jay sent to Brad, he claimed he was going to sell a watch. The inquest heard this was a watch that had been stolen.

Late rock icon Ozzy Osbourne “knew his days were numbered” when he performed his farewell gig – one of his rock star friends has revealed. Ozzy, who died on Tuesday, treated the Back To The Beginning show as his personal “celebration of life” – surrounded by those he loved.

And praise was also showered on his devoted wife Sharon for organising the show so “the world could say goodbye” to Ozzy.

The incredible new insight comes from Megadeath founding member David Ellefson, who hung out with the late Brummie artist and performed at the Villa Park gig and at many shows with his pal Ozzy over the last two decades.

Harry and Meghan’s ‘desperate’ motive for royal reunion

A royal expert has weighed in on the reason he thinks are behind the alleged peace talks between Prince Harry and his father, King Charles. After senior aides to both the Duke of Sussex and the King were spotted having a meeting in London, rumours have emerged on the potential motive behind a royal reconciliation.

Now, royal expert Robert Jobson has claimed that the rumoured peace talks may be linked to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ’s deal with Netflix drawing to a close . Speaking to The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show , the royal author suggested that Harry and Meghan could be seeking “handouts” from the King, hence the initiation of peace talks between the Sussex camp and the royal family.

Jobson said: “Well, the deal was always set at about $100 million, wasn’t it? And the talk of that figure sort of blew a lot of people’s minds, but I think that was for productions and things that they’re supposed to have done.”

Brits who smuggled Angel Delight drugs into Bali sentenced

Three Brits who smuggled £300,000 worth of cocaine into Bali stuffed in packets of the Angel Delight were today given a last-minute reprieve and will be back in UK in months.

Drug mules Lisa Stocker, 39, her partner, Jon Collyer, 39, and accomplice Phineas Float, 31, feared they could be executed under Indonesia’s strict anti-drugs laws. Collyer, 38, and Stocker, 39, were arrested in Bali’s international airport on February 1 after being stopped by customs at the X-ray machine. 992 grams of the Class A drug was found concealed across 10 sachets of Angel Delight in Collyer’s luggage combined with 7 similar sachets in his partner’s suitcase.

The couple faced the death penalty and previously begged for freedom despite Indonesia’s strict anti-drug legislation. But today a judge at Denpasar central court chose not to impose the death penalty after they admitted smuggling the narcotics into the island.

Many young people have admitted to losing faith in their GP, and have turned to alternative measures for help – but how far can Google really go when you need help?

With many of Gen Z experiencing their teenage years in Covid, it’s no wonder many suffer with health anxiety. With years worth of Covid scares as well as extortionate NHS waiting times trying to see a medical professional, people have turned to online help.

Many of us are guilty of turning to ‘Dr Google’ or ChatGPT for advice when we notice something wrong, as figures from 2023 show that there were nearly 50 million health-related Google searches, while NHS figures also show that GP consultations have fallen by 30% over the last year. Dr Martin Thornton, Chief Medical Officer at Bluecrest spoke to The Mirror why this might have happened – and why it can be so dangerous.
