According to Ahmad Hajar Zunaidi, head of the Bima Prosecutor’s Office, the capital punishment demand was presented by prosecutors during a court session on Thursday.
Zunaidi said prosecutors had gathered enough evidence to prove that defendants HS, SR, AM, and AS alias S delivered the methamphetamine from Batam, Riau Islands, to Bima City, West Nusa Tenggara, in October 2024.
The prosecutors argued that the four, members of an inter-provincial drug syndicate, had clearly violated Articles 114 (2) and 132 (1) of Narcotics Law No. 35/2009.
The case was uncovered after the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested HS during a raid in Batam on October 24, 2024. During the operation, HS was found to have swallowed three capsules containing methamphetamine.
Thanks to BNN’s collaboration with its counterparts in Bima City, the three other suspects — SR, AM, and AS — who were set to receive the drug package were also apprehended.
As previously reported, drug trafficking continues to pose a serious threat in North Sumatra, despite ongoing crackdowns by the police and the BNN.
On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the Medan District Court in North Sumatra sentenced four drug couriers to death after finding them guilty of transporting 40 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.
The defendants sentenced to capital punishment were identified as Benyamin Sembiring (39), Puji Minarto Nasution (40), Senta Sitepu (40), and Sahrial (36).
