Cambodia calls for immediate ceasefire with Thailand as death toll rises | BBC News
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Cambodia has called for an “immediate” ceasefire with Thailand, as the two countries have seen more than 30 people killed, including civilians, in the ongoing border clashes.

Cambodia’s ambassador to the UN, Chhea Keo, said his country asked for a truce “unconditionally”, adding that Phnom Penh also wanted a “peaceful solution of the dispute”.

Thailand has not publicly commented on the proposal, while rejecting third-party mediation. It earlier declared martial law in eight districts bordering Cambodia.

At least 32 people – soldiers and civilians – have been killed and nearly 200,000 displaced in the two Southeast Asian countries, who accuse each other of firing the first shots on Thursday.

Thailand has never invaded Cambodia, but Cambodians themselves covet everything Thai, such as Muay Thai, Thai clothing, Songkran, Thai temples, Thai territory, and more. We have nothing to be envious of; we have a history spanning hundreds of years. In contrast, Cambodia has only recently become a country. We understand that it's only natural for people without wealth to covet it, but slandering and attacking Thailand is something we absolutely cannot tolerate.

"As a Thai, I feel so sorry beyond words." If we go back to the Khmer Rouge era, we helped hundreds of thousands or maybe millions of Cambodians. All information is true. You can find the information I mentioned from reliable sources. Currently, Thailand has to pay billions of baht per year for "humanity" to provide education to Cambodian people and Cambodian children, providing 99.99999999% free medical treatment, all of which is 100% Thai tax money. But the Cambodians never appreciate this kindness. On the contrary, they destroy Thailand in various ways, attacking Thailand with false information, using weapons to attack hospitals, convenience stores, killing children, women, and the elderly. All of this is an ingratitude towards Thailand that cannot be forgiven. If we could go back in time, we would have let this race disappear since that day so that we would not have to hurt Thai people today. 😭😭😭 Moreover, instead of being grateful that we saved millions of lives, their descendants blame us for those we could not help. This clearly emphasizes that the Khmer race only begs and demands both from us and from the world endlessly, but never feels grateful or thankful. This is something that civilized people cannot accept. 😥 I can't describe it all. What Cambodia has done is unforgivable. #CambodiaIsWarCriminals #CambodiaMediaIsUnreliable #CambodiaShootedFirst #Scambodia

Cambodia betrayed Thailand. Now the Thai people are very sad, Thailand has reached out to help Cambodia a lot, but they hope to seize the Thai territory that the Hun Sen family needs. By initiating the Thai era but failed. Therefore, they started shooting Thailand first and created fake news to slander Thailand. What Cambodia has done is cruel and has broken all the agreements. Thai news is real news, with clear evidence both in scientific and proven terms.

At the time of the incident, I was in Thailand, in the province where the attack took place. I did not take sides with anyone, but I stood by what was right. I was there when it happened. Cambodia attacked Thailand first, in the morning of the 24th. I was so shocked that I ran until my shoes tore apart. At that moment, I didn’t even know that people had died, because everyone was just running for their lives.

The Thai military immediately retaliated against Cambodia. The Thai soldiers aimed only at Cambodian troops, targeting their weapons in order to weaken their military strength. But the Cambodian soldiers deliberately targeted Thai civilians. That was deeply shameful and inhumane.

Cambodia had been planning this attack since February, preparing everything, while Thailand had no idea—because Thailand never thought Cambodia would dare to do such a thing. Cambodia kept provoking and disturbing Thai soldiers, sending people to cause trouble near temples along the border, in order to push Thai soldiers to lose patience and strike first. This was Cambodia’s strategy: to make the world believe that Thailand was the aggressor, the bully. Once their plan succeeded, Cambodia would seek international support to drag Thailand to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for disputes over the temples.

But Thailand has refused to recognize the ICJ for decades, just as many other countries do, seeing it as lacking fairness. That is why Thailand does not accept the court’s authority. Cambodia therefore kept trying to find ways to drag Thailand into the ICJ. Even though ASEAN has its own mechanisms for dialogue and agreements, Cambodia ignored them—insisting only on the ICJ. When Thailand refused, Cambodia resorted to a dirty plan: to attack first, then play the victim, to make the world feel pity and see them as the oppressed. Yet satellite images analyzed by experts from Australia made it clear that everything started on the Cambodian side.

My father is Thai, my mother is Cambodian. I can say it openly: Cambodia played an extremely dirty game. I have lived in both countries, I watch the news from both sides, and I know well the nature of both Thai and Cambodian people. Thais are kind-hearted, compassionate, and helpful. We would never hurt anyone first. Even in military planning, they specifically decided to target only Cambodian soldiers, never civilians, because civilians have no weapons to fight. I know this because I have relatives serving in the Thai military.

As for Cambodians, most are also good people with kind hearts. But the weakness of Cambodians is their blind nationalism, to the point of refusing to accept the truth. Many Cambodians believe their government’s claims—that Thai temples, Thai costumes, Thai food, the Thai language, and everything Thai actually belongs to Cambodia, but was stolen by Thailand. They have believed this all along because the Cambodian government has planted nationalism in them since childhood. Their history textbooks teach them to hate Thais, to see Thais as invaders who constantly steal Cambodian culture.

But that is not the truth. Cambodian kings were crowned by Thai kings. Thailand has always helped Cambodians—in education, by allowing Cambodian children living along the border to study in Thai schools. Hun Sen even once asked the Thai royal family to help open schools in Cambodia, and Thailand did. During the Khmer Rouge war, the Thai monarchy sympathized with Cambodians, offering asylum, food, shelter, and medical care until they were safe. Thailand helped in every way. So why does Cambodia teach its people otherwise?

This is very different from Thailand, where citizens are never taught to hate neighbors. Instead, they are taught compassion for fellow human beings.

Now, the Cambodian government spreads fake news, deceiving its own people into believing that Thailand is the aggressor, fabricating false evidence to show the world, even planting bombs on Thai soil—and when caught, they still deny it. Even when many international news outlets reported that Cambodia fired first, Cambodians dismissed it as “fake news,” claiming those outlets were biased toward Thailand. They refuse to accept the truth, because the Cambodian government feeds them lies, insisting that Thailand struck first. Cambodians therefore believe only their own media, which is controlled by Hun Sen’s daughter.

This is exactly why the Cambodian government never allows independent media in the country: they want to stir up extreme nationalism, making Cambodians love their country blindly and believe only state-controlled news.

I truly feel sorry for the Cambodian people. This shows how important education is for Cambodia’s future.

I still cannot understand why international media and newspapers keep broadcasting and generating live shows biased toward Thailand, while they almost never come to the Cambodian side to witness and report the real truth on the ground. It is painful to see our suffering ignored, our voices silenced, and the reality of Cambodian lives erased from their headlines.

It’s interesting how this news is only based in Thailand and not the Cambodian side. As a JOURNALIST, you need to be transparent. If you report on one side, you need to report the other side too. Remember, you can’t clap with one hand.

Thailand is the aggressor and they are the one who started the war. It has already been a month and the already know there are many evidence and facts that proves Thailand is the aggressor and started this war. Cambodian around the world asked for peace but Thailand doesn’t want peace. Months before the war break off, Cambohas been receiving National Security Threats from Thailand multiple times. But Cambodian went to ICJ and UN for help instead of escalation. Here is a clip that will explain more information. https://youtu.be/OnIBSI03pa0?si=lHArx19o411wRTVc
