Indonesia confirms no citizens affected by massive Rusia earthquake

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that no Indonesian citizens were affected by the powerful earthquake that struck Russia’s Kamchatka region on Wednesday morning local time.

Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the ministry, Judha Nugraha, said his office is closely coordinating with the Indonesian Embassies in Moscow and Tokyo as well as the Consulates General in Osaka and Los Angeles.

“According to communication between the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow and Indonesians in Russia, no Indonesians have been impacted by the quake,” Nugraha said in a written statement on Wednesday.

He added that the embassy in Moscow recorded 53 Indonesian nationals residing in the Russian Far Eastern Federal District—the region closest to the epicenter of the earthquake.

The embassies and consulates have maintained close communication with both local authorities and Indonesians within their jurisdictions to monitor their conditions.

Indonesians in affected areas have also been advised to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks and tsunami risks, Nugraha added.

The Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences later revised the quake’s magnitude to 8.5, up from preliminary estimates ranging between 7.7 and 7.9.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 8.7, stating that the quake occurred 126 kilometers southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 18 kilometers. The US National Tsunami Warning Center issued tsunami alerts for Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and parts of the US West Coast in response to the seismic activity.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency estimated the magnitude at 8.0 and issued its own tsunami warning, with waves of up to three meters anticipated.
