Minister confident Indonesia’s exports to US remain solid

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Trade Minister Budi Santoso remains optimistic that Indonesia’s exports to the United States (US) will continue to show a surplus after the 19 percent import tariff takes effect on August 7, 2025.

He believes Indonesia is ahead of other countries, especially since the tariff applied to Indonesia is lower than those imposed on other competing nations.

“If the US market remains promising, it will be easier for us to penetrate the market because we do not start from scratch. We are one step ahead compared to other countries,” he stated on Wednesday.

He explained that Indonesia’s competition with other countries for access to the US market is based on the Most Favored Nation (MFN) system, which treats all World Trade Organization (WTO) member countries equally.

This means that the tariff imposed on Indonesia also applies equally to other countries.

Meanwhile, the reciprocal tariff will benefit Indonesia as it is lower than tariffs imposed on countries such as Brazil, Canada, Europe, India, and others.

“Now, the MFN tariffs are almost the same. With a reciprocal tariff, we are also getting lower prices. This is easier to reach our target market. This is a great opportunity to enter the US,” he emphasized.

Hence, the minister reminded all business actors to make the most of this opportunity.

Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) shows the US has the largest trade balance surplus, valued at US$9.92 billion in the January-June 2025 period.

In terms of exports, the United States ranks second, with a value of US$14.79 billion in the January-June 2025 period.

The three supporting commodities are machinery and electrical equipment at US$2.80 billion, footwear at US$1.29 billion, and knit clothing and accessories at US$1.28 billion.

Cumulatively, from January to June 2025, the export value increased by 20.71 percent compared to the same period last year.
