Minister invites UIII to support transmigration area development

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Transmigration Minister M. Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara has invited the International Islamic University of Indonesia (UIII) to involve foreign researchers and students on its campus in efforts to develop transmigration areas in Indonesia.

He said that his ministry has a flagship program, the Transmigration Patriot, which enables students and researchers from within and outside the country to directly explore the potential for development in transmigration areas.

“In the near future, we need researchers from outside the ministry. I am confident that UIII will enrich its perspectives. We also need foreign researchers to provide inputs from various viewpoints,” he said during a visit to the UIII campus in Depok, West Java, according to a statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Suryanagara emphasized that the new paradigm of transmigration no longer involves relocating people, but rather building new centers of economic growth in transmigration areas.

He said that new economic growth can be achieved with the use of science and research data, specifically for effective and targeted industrialization in transmigration areas.

He further said he is hoping that economic development in transmigration areas will be based on their potential.

“Economic development also requires research results on the potential that can be developed there,” Suryanagara added.

Meanwhile, UIII rector Jamhari Makruf welcomed the invitation to collaborate, saying it aligns with his institution’s mission to promote good ideas from Indonesia to other countries.

He informed that many UIII students come from abroad, particularly Japan, South Asia, Australia, Africa, and Latin America.

“Many of our students come from Africa and South Asia, whose societies and characteristics are similar to ours (Indonesia),” he said.

Makruf added that international students pursuing undergraduate degrees are currently involved in various activities involving local communities, making them potential candidates for the Patriot Transmigration program.

Meanwhile, master’s and doctoral students can be encouraged to write research on local governance, decentralization, and local economic zones.

“If we could collaborate, having master’s and PhD students write their dissertations at the same time would be very interesting,” Makruf added.
