Air Canada plans to gradually resume flights starting Tuesday evening, after it reached a tentative agreement with the union representing its flight attendants.
But cancellations hit more than 500,000 travellers over recent days and getting stranded passengers to their destinations won’t happen overnight.
Federal air passenger protection regulations mean travellers are entitled to rebook a flight or receive a cash refund. But passengers say they’re facing headwinds when it comes to getting back what they’re owed.
Global’s Heidi Petracek spoke with stranded passengers to find out more about the frustrations they’re facing.

Glorified waitresses thought they should make as much as nurses. Disgusting.

Air Canada troubles highlight competition, passenger protection issues, experts say “
Do any of the politicians promise any reform to air travel rules that actually protect customers ?
Not one regardless the backlog of complaints clearly indicating a total disregard for weak rules. Worded so they are easily challenged .
No sympathy for these idiots. Who in their right mind would book a flight with an airline that had a potential labor issue pending? We’ve known for weeks that Air Canada wasn’t interested in bargaining and that the union would walk. Let them stay stranded.
Air Canada is at fault. They refused to negotiate with CUPE, and tried to bully flight attendants back to work thru legal action. Workers were stranded as well as passengers. Air Canada let everyone down.
The unions were asking for a fair deal. Travellers wanted to return home. Air Canada could've done more to prevent this strike.
As a Canadian, I refuse to fly with Air Canada. WORST AIRLINE SERVICE EVER!!!!
Automate all processes flight attendants do. Super easy.
Flight attendants are a security vulnerability anyway. Cyber and physical.
Far better to get rid of that century old job. It is no longer needed in the modern world.
0:10 ASKING APOLOGY AND MONEY BACK… HOW ABOUT ASKING FREE FLIGHTS TO INDIA FOR LIFE?? 😅😅
Air Canada is an Oligopoly, just like banks, telecoms, and railroads. The government has always been cozy to them. I have no sympathy for the union, which chose the fantastic timing to have the most impact on travellers. Yes, the traveller’s who pay the salaries of management and workers. The lame government needs to step in and do something. This country is a basket case.
Everyone knew labour dispute was impending. Maybe buy some travel insurances? No one is obligated to work for free and the CEO certaintly didn't earn his 12.5 million dollars. AC is a profitable company.
Two word solution
West Jet
Worst airline ever!!!
Omg ! What next…lol
The airline will, by law, reimburse the price of the tickets. It will take a class action lawsuit to get back all the extra expenses incurred as a result of air Canada's failure in this debacle.
Entitled people! No sympathy here.
Oh boo friggin hoo, you people knew there was a chance and a very good one at that that they would be going on strike, yet you still went on your vacation and did t have anything in place for a backup plan…
You didn’t “suffer”. You were inconvenienced 🙄
Air Carnival another Canadian failure
I've said for years, only fly Delta here to The States, or most international destinations via Atlanta, JFK, Boston, Detroit, or Minneapolis.
Ignore my wise experienced council or suffer the consequences quietly.
In this strike, the union should pay all expenses, not AC. No reason for AC to be stiffed when they were always ready to fly.
Get over it😂😂😂😂
Air Canada will survive because the Canadian govt subsidies them. The govt will continue to pump our tax dollars in to a company with poor service that knows they can do the bare minimum for customers to stay in business.
Awe! They crossed a picket line! All stranded passengers deserve this.
It could cost Air Canada up to $66 million to compensate stranded passengers. The management team at Air Canada mishandled the negotiations with the stewardesses/flight crew staff. They knew they were shortchanging the flight staff in terms of salary and unpaid work hours. Heads should roll within that management team. This was all preventable if the AC management had been more reasonable with the union representing the flight crew employees. Air Canada management sure takes care of itself. For example, Air Canada's President and CEO, Michael Rousseau, received a total compensation of $12.08 million in 2023, which included a salary of $1.3 million, $7.8 million in stock and option awards, and a $2.6 million bonus.
