“Indonesia does not merely provide development assistance to Africa, but also offers partnership, solidarity, and solutions tailored to the specific needs of each country,” said Director of International Development Cooperation at the Foreign Ministry, Rina Setyawati, in a press statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo on Monday.
She delivered the remarks during a thematic discussion titled “Cooperation with Africa from Different Regions,” organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Yokohama, Japan, on August 22, 2025.
According to Rina, Indonesia’s development assistance for Africa is based on three key principles, alignment with the needs of each country, mutual benefits, and solidarity.
She stressed that Indonesia views Africa as an equal development partner and continues to strengthen cooperation that aligns with national development priorities in each African partner country.
Indonesia’s assistance includes capacity building, scholarships, the deployment of experts, and infrastructure development.

Rina emphasized that synergy among emerging development partners is crucial, not only for carrying out joint projects in Africa but also for advocating for African interests in shaping global development norms.
Over the past decade, Indonesia’s development assistance has reached more than 42 percent of African countries, covering sectors such as agriculture, health, food security, and energy.
Indonesia has also played a role in the establishment of the Emerging Development Partners (EDP) platform, which serves as a network for new development partners to strengthen their bargaining position in international forums on development cooperation.

The thematic discussion formed part of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) and featured panelists from countries and institutions in the Global South, including Indonesia, Turkey, Brazil, and Thailand.
