“The president’s presence at the UNGA highlights Indonesia’s role as a key actor in the Global South, promoting peace, international law, and reform of global governance,” ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang stated on Wednesday.
She added that the UNGA offers Indonesia an opportunity to reaffirm its position as a leader and bridge for developing countries — a role vital to advancing a more inclusive and just international order.
Prabowo’s attendance also serves as momentum to advance Indonesia’s national interests on the global stage, she remarked.
Beyond the General Debate, Prabowo is scheduled to deliver remarks at “the High-level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.”
The 80th Session of the UNGA opened on September 9, with the General Debate set to begin on September 23. Prabowo will be the first Indonesian president to address the UNGA in more than a decade.
Former president Joko Widodo never attended the forum in person during his 10-year term, consistently delegating the foreign minister to represent Indonesia.
Tri Tharyat, the ministry’s Director General for Multilateral Cooperation, said earlier that Palestine would be a central theme in Prabowo’s debut speech, alongside other pressing global issues.
“We await the official text, but key points are expected to include the attack on Qatar and, of course, Palestine,” Tharyat noted.
