Indonesia may consider State Revenue Agency if tax targets missed
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said the government could consider establishing a State Revenue Agency (BPN) if efforts to optimize revenue from taxes and customs duties fail to meet targets.

He emphasized on Monday that the current revenue strategy will continue to be tested.

He said that the government will keep assessing potential increases and evaluating the results before deciding on further steps. Intervention through the creation of BPN is not yet necessary, he added.

He also signaled possible changes in the positions of officials previously projected to oversee BPN. Although he did not mention names, reports indicate that Deputy Finance Minister Anggito Abimanyu may soon be reassigned.

Sadewa added that the final decision on the establishment of BPN would depend on President Prabowo Subianto’s directive.

As of August 31, the government’s tax revenues had fallen 3.6 percent, reaching Rp1,330.4 trillion (around US$86.2 billion), or 55.7 percent of the 2025 state budget outlook. Tax revenue declined 5.1 percent to Rp1,135.4 trillion, or 54.7 percent of the outlook, while customs and excise revenue grew 6.4 percent, reaching Rp194.9 trillion, or 62.8 percent of the outlook.

Following his inauguration, Sadewa introduced several new policies, including allocating Rp200 trillion to state-owned banks to strengthen liquidity in the banking system and the broader economy.

He also launched the 2025 Economic Package Program, aimed at boosting economic growth, job creation, and providing more predictable tax incentives for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Sadewa further highlighted the government’s focus on presidential priority programs, including the free nutritious meal initiative, tighter monitoring of the state budget deficit, and plans to expand tax incentives across various sectors.
