Indonesia-Turkiye fast-track aviation pact expands direct flight links

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The governments of Indonesia and Türkiye have agreed to expand cooperation in civil aviation to strengthen connectivity, thereby opening new avenues for mutually beneficial tourism and trade activities.

Air Transport Director at Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry, Agustinus Budi Hartono, led the Indonesian delegation during a bilateral aviation meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye, on October 22–23, according to a statement cited here on Sunday.

“This meeting resulted in the signing of two important documents, namely the record of discussion and the implementing arrangement, which serve as foundations for deepening aviation collaboration between the two countries,” Hartono stated.

He explained that the Istanbul meeting followed up on an agreement reached by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the inaugural meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council in Bogor, Indonesia, on February 12 this year.

The two countries have agreed to broaden their bilateral aviation network, with Indonesia opening new direct routes from Türkiye to Yogyakarta, Majalengka, Manado, Medan, Balikpapan, Sorong, Kediri, and Lombok—adding to the existing destinations of Jakarta and Denpasar.

Meanwhile, Türkiye has approved plans to open direct flights from Indonesia to two additional cities—Izmir and Bodrum—besides Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya.

In addition to route expansion, the two sides agreed to a substantial increase in passenger traffic rights under third and fourth freedom provisions, raising the weekly flight quota from 14 to 32.

To further improve flight efficiency, both governments agreed to facilitate updates to codeshare arrangements, enabling airlines from third countries to cooperate with Indonesian or Turkish carriers in serving routes beyond the agreed destinations.

Both countries also endorsed the utilization of unutilized entitlements, such as flight frequencies or seat capacities not yet exercised under existing agreements.

This arrangement allows airlines to form commercial partnerships to exchange and optimize these entitlements without awaiting agreement revisions.

Additionally, Türkiye has expressed its commitment to recruiting more Indonesian pilots and cabin crew members, strengthening cooperation in aircraft maintenance, and assisting in the promotion of Indonesian tourist destinations.
