Indonesia targets 32 percent 5G network coverage by 2030

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian government is aiming to expand 5G internet network coverage to 32 percent by 2030.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria announced the target during the launch of “the Empowering Indonesia Report 2025” in Jakarta on Monday.

He said the current 5G network availability in Indonesia remains below 10 percent, far behind neighboring countries such as Malaysia, which has reached 80 percent.

To accelerate development, Patria called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in the telecommunications industry to expand 5G coverage nationwide.

Indonesia, however, has made notable progress in 4G connectivity, which now reaches 97 percent of residential areas, he added.

He acknowledged that despite wide 4G access, national internet speeds remain low and need improvement.

“Internet speed still needs to be improved; it has not reached 100 Mbps yet, still around 36.7 Mbps,” he said.

Patria expressed optimism that with greater participation from telecommunications companies, Indonesia can compete with more advanced neighboring countries within the next five years.

Meanwhile, Director General of Digital Infrastructure, Wayan Toni Supriyanto, said his office is focusing on three aspects to expand 5G coverage: radio frequency spectrum, infrastructure, and regulations.

“In terms of radio frequency spectrum, we will bid four frequency bands — one for 5G-based fixed broadband and the remaining three for 5G-based mobile broadband,” he said.

For disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions, the ministry plans to use non-terrestrial networks (NTN), providing satellite-based connectivity to support 5G access.
