Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) Head Mukhtarudin met with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo at City Hall on Wednesday to discuss strengthening protection and improving the quality of Indonesian migrant workers, particularly those from Jakarta.
The Jakarta Provincial Government expressed its full support for the ministry’s strategic initiatives to develop a skilled and competitive workforce capable of meeting global labor market demands.
“We want to prepare Jakarta’s workforce to compete in upper-middle sectors such as welding, hospitality, and engineering,” Governor Pramono said.
He emphasized that the Jakarta administration will continue to collaborate with the central government to expand employment opportunities for Jakarta residents in various countries, including South Korea, Japan, Western and Eastern Europe, China, and the Middle East.

The Governor also underlined that the government holds responsibility for migrant workers who depart independently, including ensuring their protection and safe repatriation.
Minister Mukhtarudin stated that collaboration with the Jakarta Provincial Government is a crucial step in strengthening cross-sector synergy in addressing migrant worker issues.
He highlighted that protecting Indonesian migrant workers is not solely the responsibility of the central government but also requires active participation from local governments as part of a comprehensive protection system.

“Improving safety, quality, and the promotion of migrant workers are the main focuses of this collaboration,” Mukhtarudin said.
He added that through this partnership, both sides are committed to developing capacity-building, promotion, and training programs for prospective migrant workers to meet the global labor market’s growing shift from low-skill to medium- and high-skill demands.
Mukhtarudin described the cooperation with the Jakarta administration as a strategic effort to create a more competitive and skilled workforce aligned with the evolving needs of international labor markets.
He noted that global demand for Indonesian workers has increasingly shifted from household work to sectors requiring higher technical skills.
“For that reason, we express our gratitude to the Governor of Jakarta for his commitment and collaboration in improving the quality of Indonesian migrant workers,” Mukhtarudin concluded.
