The first memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Indonesian Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and British Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband on the sidelines of the Belém Leaders Summit in Brazil on November 7.
According to Nurofiq, the MoU seeks to expand cooperation in climate mitigation and adaptation, strengthen carbon management, and promote sustainable, low-carbon development.
“It emphasizes Indonesia’s commitment to climate change mitigation and reinforces our environmental diplomacy at the global level, which we are currently pursuing,” he said.
The minister added that a letter of intent (LoI) on environmental cooperation was also signed between the Environment Ministry and The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales in Rio de Janeiro.
Under the agreement, both parties will establish new initiatives to involve the private and financial sectors, strengthen law enforcement cooperation, and enhance coordination on biodiversity protection and combating environmental crimes.
Nurofiq said the LoI reflects the two nations’ shared commitment to biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and the fight against illegal wildlife trade and other environmental crimes.
Indonesia was represented at the Belém Leaders Summit by the President’s Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, who was accompanied by Nurofiq and Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni.
Held on November 6–7, 2025, the summit served as a preparatory meeting ahead of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), bringing together world leaders to discuss global climate challenges.
