Prijono, who led the Indonesian delegation at the main session of the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee — which oversees administrative and budgetary matters — in New York on Friday, said the election reflected global recognition of Indonesia’s professionalism and credibility.
“This achievement proves that BPK plays an active role in promoting good governance practices at the global level. Indonesia has demonstrated itself as a competent, trustworthy, and genuinely contributing partner,” Prijono said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Saturday.
Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir, who attended the election, said BPK’s appointment was in line with Indonesia’s and many other countries’ commitment to promoting governance reform within the UN.
“This membership comes at a crucial time amid ongoing UN reforms. As a member of the UN BoA, BPK is expected to help strengthen global governance, particularly in the areas of financial and managerial oversight within the UN,” Nasir said.
BPK was elected to replace China’s National Audit Office, which previously represented the Asia-Pacific region.
Over a six-year term (2026–2032), BPK will work alongside the two other UN BoA members — France’s Cour des Comptes and Brazil’s Tribunal de Contas da União — to audit UN agencies.
In its statement, BPK said it is committed to strengthening accountability, transparency, and good governance within the UN through independent, professional, efficient, and innovative auditing.
In addition to its new role in the UN BoA, BPK was also elected this year as Chair of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) for the 2028–2031 term and will host the 26th International Congress of Supreme Audit Institutions (INCOSAI) in 2028.
Indonesia’s candidacy for the UN BoA was first announced in 2021. Member-state support was secured through intensive diplomacy by BPK and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both bilaterally and in various international forums, leading to Indonesia’s unanimous election.
