Indonesia’s support for Palestine a historical duty: deputy FM

Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s unwavering support for Palestine reflects a commitment to settling a historical debt, as Palestine was among the first to recognize Indonesia’s independence, Deputy Foreign Minister Anis Matta said on Monday.

“Our role in Palestine affairs stems not only from a constitutional mandate, religious solidarity, and humanitarian responsibility, but also from a debt born after President Soekarno pioneered the Asia-Africa Conference (in 1955),” he stated in Makassar.

He delivered the remarks while opening an international seminar at Makassar State Islamic University, themed “President Prabowo Subianto’s Key Role in Promoting Peace in Gaza.”

Matta said Indonesia shares the responsibility to make all-out efforts to guide Palestine toward independence, as mandated by the 1945 Constitution.

He added that from the Soekarno era through the New Order and Reform eras to President Prabowo’s administration, Indonesia has consistently provided Palestine with humanitarian aid and political support in global forums.

“Historically speaking, Palestine was among the first countries to recognize Indonesia’s independence. For this reason, we are persistent in providing political support from President Soekarno’s era to President Prabowo’s era,” he emphasized.

He noted that President Prabowo has made a breakthrough in Indonesia’s struggle for Palestine through a plan to deploy 20,000 soldiers for a possible peacekeeping mission in Gaza.

While the plan has not been finalized, Matta affirmed that Indonesia is ready to join a United Nations–led operation.

“The government has indeed prepared soldiers for peacekeeping. However, no decision has been made, as negotiations are still ongoing,” he elaborated.

He added that the peacekeeping force would consist mostly of military doctors and medics, as earlier stated by Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
