“New Zealand is our neighbor, and we signed this LoI with New Zealand so that we can strengthen carbon governance and the carbon markets,” Nurofiq said at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, on Tuesday local time.
The minister affirmed that Indonesia is actively implementing a strong carbon governance framework and developing the domestic carbon market to encourage emission reduction through efficient economic mechanisms.
During Tuesday’s meeting, both ministers exchanged views on key environmental and climate change issues of mutual concern.
“We are determined to translate our global commitment into real and measurable actions on the ground,” he stressed.
He further said that as tangible proof of its commitment, Indonesia has officially submitted the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (ENDC), which reflects its higher ambition in climate mitigation and adaptation.
Minister Nurofiq has continued to intensify bilateral meetings with a number of countries during COP30 to enhance cooperation among nations in tackling climate change.
Bilateral meetings have been held between Indonesia and New Zealand, Finland, China, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sweden, Brazil, and Norway.
The Indonesian government is targeting transactions of up to 90 million tons of CO2 with a total value of Rp16 trillion (US$956.9 million) from carbon trading during COP30, which is held from November 10 to 21.
To achieve this target, ‘Seller Meet Buyer’ sessions are held at the Indonesian Pavilion at COP30, bringing together carbon credit sellers, potential buyers, and investors.
