Angola, Ethiopia seek deeper farm ties with Indonesia, says minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia has drawn strong interest from Angola and Ethiopia to expand agricultural cooperation, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said Saturday after a round of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in South Africa.

Hartarto said both countries signaled plans to send official delegations to Indonesia next year. “Angola and Ethiopia expressed their desire to visit Indonesia, possibly next year,” he said in an online briefing from Johannesburg on Saturday evening.

Jakarta, he added, will prepare technical steps through relevant ministries and brief President Prabowo Subianto to advance the potential partnerships.

Hartarto noted that several Indonesian companies already operate in Ethiopia, but a new cooperation framework—especially for agriculture—is needed to deepen investment links.

“Five to six Indonesian investors have invested in Ethiopia, and they need support from the government, particularly in agriculture and palm oil derivative sectors,” he said.

He added that other countries also expressed interest in broader economic cooperation with Indonesia. Finland, for example, has shown interest in investing in the data center industry.

“Finland, known for high technology, is interested in data centers,” he said.

Hartarto also highlighted ongoing defense and energy collaborations, including the signing of an MoU between PT Dahana and German defense firm Rheinmetall to develop an explosives facility. In the energy sector, he noted investment plans worth around US$2.6 billion in the upstream oil and gas industry involving Pertamina and international partners.

The G20 Summit itself covered a wide range of global challenges across three main sessions. The first addressed sustainable economic issues, the role of trade and finance in development, and debt burdens in developing countries.

The second session focused on building a resilient world, including disaster management, climate change, the just energy transition and global food systems.

The third session examined decent work, artificial intelligence governance and critical minerals—an agenda Indonesia pushed as a key priority at this year’s meeting.
