At least four people are reported dead as a fire engulfs multiple high-rise residential buildings in Hong Kong.

Footage shows flames and smoke billowing from the towers, where several people are also believed to be trapped.

The fire is believed to have spread through bamboo scaffolding on the outside of the buildings, and emergency services are at the scene.

There is a YT video compiled by HK TVB giving background to the controversial renovation project imposed on all the residents of the apartment complex https://youtu.be/ANZE47PnsMs?si=w21Uep9w26zETrC0 . The video is in Cantonese with no English caption available. It is an interview of some of the residents (apartment owners) who expressed grave concerns about the lack of consultation about the payment terms (up to HKD 180,000 per apartment paid in 4 trenches over an 8 then extended to 10 month period although the project was to be completed in 24 months). An interesting aspect of this renovation project was that the Body Corporate selected a Construction/Engineering company that submitted the highest cost tender and the difference was in excess of a million HKD in comparison to the other bidders. If this company were found to used substandard non-compliant building materials resulting in this huge tragedy, it would be important to extend the scope of investigation to include the integrity of the tendering process resulting in the selection of the renovating construction company.

The Chinese government will cover up actual number of deaths. Best to multiply it by ten for a more accurate figure.
Maybe if they spent less time and money on spying on other countries and looked after their health and safety building standards, this would have been avoided.
Polystyrene cladding, no sprinkler systems, no fire alarms etc. What could possibly go wrong!!

I wonder how they fight fires at such a height. In New York they rely on water reservoirs for on the roofs from, I believe, the seventh floor upwards. I pray for the victims and their families.

As a HongKonger, this is an important message i hope everyone can see this and sorry for my bad English.

If the problem is with the bamboo, then why are the bamboo stalks still standing after burning all night? The real problem is clearly the netting.

Furthermore, there are reasons why Hong Kong uses bamboo.
Bamboo is flexible, which increases its wind resistance in Hong Kong, where typhoons are common.

Bamboo's lower thermal conductivity compared to metal makes it easier for firefighters to rescue people. Can you imagine a firefighter step on a 1000°C metal rod ?

Bamboo can be quickly recycled after construction, and if it falls, it's not as fatal as metal.

Not to mention, bamboo retains moisture and is more fire-resistant. Unlike metal, it doesn't rust. Have you ever seen a bamboo grove collapse due to mold after rain?

You mentioned using alloy? Wouldn't that be even more expensive?

I don't understand why you're all focusing on bamboo.

It's not an accident. The fact were 1) Fire alarms didn't go off because of the renovation works, it caused many residents can't escape asap because they didn't know outside situation. 2) All residents windows covered by highly flammable foam board, blocking their view. 3) Using non fire-resistance netting (green one) contributed fuels for fire spread.

Some residents said that the fire went up vigorously to their flats within 10 minutes. They were not capable of running down or up because of heavy smoke. They returned back to their flats and used the wet cloths to block the door gaps preventing from the heaving smoke entering their flats. They were scared, kept talking to her husband over the phone until no one answering. This was one of the stories from a man who told the journalist. When I watched the TV lives, I bursted into a tear. You could feel his desperation, wish the firefrigheters could save his wife in the flat. However, the situation was more worse than you thought because temperature was too high inside caused firefighters danger and they were not allowed to enter.

We know that it is not an accident and whistleblower Jason Poon, Construction Safety Specialist said the governement ignored the expert's advice, didn't listen to the hidden problems even numerous fire happened recently. He has been speaking out these problems for almost a year. The corruption and political parties were only concerned for their benefits because of huge amount of renovation fees. More ridiculous was those fee were injected from residents, every household had to pay almost HKD150,000-190,000 (GBP15,000-19,000) for their property renovation project, a total of HKD330 million (GBP33 million). Finally, they dead from those corrouption management and arrogant governement. This was a man-made diaster.

Questions: – when that green fabric was put on?
-was the apartments paid off, or their payments were too low compared to current market?
    – did people have insurance on their apartments?
    – who gona rebuild the property after the fire and was there any new projects near by to be built?
    – what value the location of those buildings brings if they were not there?
Answer those questions and you might find people who allegedly helped “demolishing “
