RI pushes nature-based solutions in forestry sector, dy minister says
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is advancing nature-based solutions in its forestry sector to strengthen the economic value of carbon and accelerate its green economy transition, Deputy Forestry Minister Rohmat Marzuki said on Wednesday.

“Indonesia is transforming the economic value of forest carbon into a driver of the green economy. We are unlocking the potential of nature-based solutions,” Marzuki said at the Global Carbon Summit Indonesia 2025.

He said Indonesia’s approach focuses not only on reducing emissions but also on increasing carbon sequestration through afforestation, reforestation and revegetation, with a total target of about 12 million hectares.

The ministry has implemented the Social Forestry program covering 8.3 million hectares, supported by sustainable forest management and community empowerment involving indigenous peoples and local communities.

Indonesia is seeking to recognize up to 1.4 million hectares of customary forests over the next four years to strengthen community-based protection efforts.

Citing BloombergNEF data, Marzuki said Indonesia’s forestry sector holds an estimated carbon value potential of 13.4 billion tons of CO₂e between 2024 and 2050.

He said the figure underscores Indonesia’s potential to become one of the world’s leading sources of high-quality forest carbon credits.

To support this, Indonesia has expanded cooperation with global partners to strengthen transparency and integrity in carbon trading frameworks.

These partnerships include collaboration with the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) and the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA).

Marzuki said Indonesia has prepared regulatory frameworks to ensure carbon trading operates effectively, including Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025 on Carbon Economic Value Instruments and National Greenhouse Gas Emission Control.

He said the regulation provides clarity on carbon pricing mechanisms, verification processes, credit issuance and monitoring systems to ensure environmental integrity and investor confidence.

Indonesia, he added, will continue aligning its forestry programs with long-term climate goals while ensuring that carbon markets contribute to economic growth, community welfare and forest protection.

Marzuki said the government aims to position Indonesia as a leading actor in the global green economy through sustainable forest management and transparent carbon credit mechanisms.
