Megawati calls US attack on Venezuela as neocolonialist’s act

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s former president Megawati Soekarnoputri on Saturday strongly condemned the recent United States military intervention in Venezuela, calling it a neocolonialist act that violates national sovereignty and threatens the foundations of the international order.

The daughter of Indonesia’s founding president Soekarno made the remarks in her capacity as chair of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) during celebrations marking the party’s 53rd anniversary and the opening of its first National Meeting of 2026 in North Jakarta.

“The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle denounces any form of United States military intervention in Venezuela, including the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife,” Megawati said, describing the operation as one that has triggered widespread international concern.

Megawati, who served as Indonesia’s fifth president from 2001 to 2004, said the US action in early January represents a serious blow to global efforts to uphold peace and stability, while eroding trust in the international system.

She said the operation reflected “neocolonialism and modern imperialism,” warning that such actions directly challenge the United Nations Charter and the core principles governing relations between sovereign states.

Megawati reiterated Indonesia’s long-standing opposition to colonialism in all its forms, recalling the spirit of the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung, which called for solidarity among nations against domination and foreign control.

“The Indonesian nation rejects any international order that seeks to justify the use of force to undermine the sovereignty of another country,” she said, adding that such practices contradict the values of equality and mutual respect.

She also stressed that the PDIP supports efforts by nations to resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomacy, arguing that peaceful engagement remains the only sustainable path to lasting solutions.

Megawati expressed confidence that military force would never deliver genuine justice or democracy, warning that coercion only deepens suffering and instability.

“True democracy is not born from weapons, justice does not emerge from unilateral aggression, and civilizations are never built by trampling on the dignity of sovereign nations,” she said.
