Central Sulawesi vows to phase out use of coal, expand solar power

Palu (ANTARA) – The Central Sulawesi Provincial Government has expressed its commitment to promoting a clean energy transition by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and coal.

“In the future, there will no longer be any power plants using fossil fuels or coal. Solar power plants (PLTS) are being developed,” said Central Sulawesi Governor Anwar Hafid in Palu on Tuesday.

He explained that the provincial government plans to develop PLTS as a more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative energy source.

This step is part of broader efforts to protect the environment while ensuring a stable electricity supply for the community without causing environmental damage.

“We have also collaborated with Alkhairaat to build PLTS on local government offices. Several offices are already involved, including the governor’s office and the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) office, which is currently under construction,” he said.

According to Anwar, solar energy is a strategic solution for Central Sulawesi, which receives abundant sunshine throughout the year. To support this initiative, the provincial government has partnered with Alkhairaat, a state-owned company, to develop solar power facilities.

Solar power systems have already been installed at several government offices. Going forward, the governor aims for all government offices in Central Sulawesi to rely on solar power plants as their primary energy source.

Beyond environmental benefits, Anwar believes solar power can significantly reduce electricity operating costs. He said the use of solar energy could cut electricity expenses by up to 40 percent.

“The roofs of government offices will be equipped with solar panels, reducing our electricity costs by up to 40 percent,” he said.

This efficiency is expected to strengthen budget management both within the government and for the broader community. With lower electricity costs, local governments will have greater fiscal space to allocate funds to other development programs.
