After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. These actors(Tom’s students)ARE TERRIBLE. ‘BUNCH OF ROOKIES, NEWBIE ACTORS. NOWHERE AS CHARISMATIC, MYSTERIOUS, CHARMING AND INTRIGUING COMPARED TO TOM’S ORIGINAL CREW. Payback
In all honesty, I watched the new movie, didn't care for it, any more than the original. The original had some cool flight sequences, but characters, acting, not so great. I like Val Kilmer, but his character was a waste of his talent. The latest movie was tough to sit through, I found myself knowing exactly what was coming next, like I'd seen it before. Same dramatic points, Maverick in trouble, gets reprieve, in trouble again, looks like super hero, everyone duds him, then he's the hero. It's like a Hallmark movie with planes. I'm not an aviation expert in any way. But, I grew up around NASNI, NAS Miramar, MCAS El Toro, March AFB, then spent years work on same as a contractor. I met numerous pilots in my youth, knew test pilots through my grandfather's years of involvement in the F4 upgrade program. They were fun, mischievous, fun loving guys, but not the brawling buffoons depicted in the movie…..both movies. People that think 'it's the best movie of all time', probably blown away by 'Transformers' type movies. Domestic movies have lost their appeal. Foreign films depicting military subjects usually have more depth, character building, historical or at least physical reality in their films. 'Rogue country, secret uranium stockpile, guarded by impossible to defeat new generation aircraft, our hero defeating super planes with old, neglected F14 that just happened to be sitting, ready for action. Come on, it's like comic book stuff. Wish I could get my money back. Should have known based on the hype. If people enjoyed it, that's awesome. But I would like something better. Characters I feel empathy for, realistic action sequences, not 'Krunchy Tiger Hidden Dragon' with wings. No doubt at least some of the pilots I've known years ago would have laughed at most of this film. Seriously, all the hype about access this, flying that, China supposedly being fooled by the poorly done cgi hypersonic plane. I expected more. No, I think it turned out exactly like I thought it would.
