“Sick and tired of it”: BC businesses speak out after weekend smash-and-grabs
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Two White Rock, B.C., businesses are speaking out about what they say is a rise in crime in the community, after both facing smash-and-grab and grab break-ins over the weekend.

Mounties have released video of one of the Saturday morning incidents, in which a thief grabs a large rock, then throws it through the glass door of Crystal Smoke and Convenience.

The manager told Global News the shop lost at least $7,000 in product, and that repairs will cost another $1,300.

David Gadeke who owns the nearby David Michael of London salon had his windows smashed the same morning, and estimates the break in will cost him between $3,000 and $4,000.

RCMP are working to determine if the two incidents are related.

Global’s Angela Jung reports on what’s behind the rising crime in the neighborhood.

Well you get what you voted for. Liberals letting crime go wild and making it worse with bad policy. And the NDP drug lords of BC. Just gonna keep getting worse due to voting these people in and hand tie the police and woke judges.

I've been saying for years…..recriminalize drugs, take away safe consumption sites, reinstate mandatory drug rehabilitation upon arrest for a minimum of 6 months, and almost guaranteed the problem will start to slow through the dying off from overdoses, or people getting clean. I sound horrible, but at the end of the day, it's either letting things get worse or put a stop to it all. There is no in between

Well look at all the high rises they have built, how much the population has grown, all the people who have moved in from all over the lower mainland……White Rock was a quiet family town, now it looks like Vancouver, as of 2023 it got its first homeless population. So yes its the weak government with its weak on crime but its also a changing city and no longer this quaint little family seaside town

When I see things like this happen, am I the only one who thinks “who raised these people?”

I feel like too many people want children but don’t care or want to do the actual work of raising them right.

Well, the best law in Canada, Canadian lawmakers should be given a nobel prize for passing this stupid law "when burglary is happening just let them get what they need,"😂😂😂, either at home or in business premises..if owners use lethal force or aggressive actions homeowners and/or business owners need to face charges for defending their livelihood..right😂😂😂, the best lawmakers are Canadians

My 🐈sy country 🇨🇦 needs an attitude change.

Every person should lawfully be allowed to use any force necessary including lethal force to defend themselves, family, property and even come to the defence of others.

Holding the drug users hands to make sure that they don't die so they can commit crimes to support their drug use. If he's caught he will be charged with minor offenses and released to do it again.

If you are running a smoke shop, get some bars for your doors and windows. And maybe a security gate you slide down and lock. Business owners need to make it as difficult as possible, because weak catch and release laws have people doing this sort of stuff non stop. Glass is like an unlocked bike to these guys.

Yes not to mention all the incidents that don't make the news I was an assistant manager at a Reitmans in BC 15 years ago they had an armed robbery a month before I started working there a co-worker had a machete in her face forced to open the safe then I went to work at Michael Hill and they had a car drive through the Lougheed mall after hours smash right through their security gate glass everywhere too so that's all just been normalized now I suppose and gone from bad to worse.

businesses keep putting those big stupid windows in without bars. people asking for theft and destruction for a slightly better view. still, all of the crime is equally the fault of our crime assisting courts.

My sister's store gets hit every day at metrotown… she says it's so tiresome and traumatic every time it happens. Over 1.5k worth of glasses each time. They can't do anything when it happens besides calling 911. Not even allowed to leave the store… but record with their devices… just get get a good picture of the thief for the cops.
One repeat thief since he started coming has stolen almost 10k worth of glasses. They caught him but let him go… like how?!?!? I feel bad for my sister and her coworkers.

Maybe BC government should look at their progressive approach to drug use. You get what you vote for.
