Major delays are expected to continue at Vancouver International Airport with one of 2 runways out of commission.
The airport said it was “operating with some reductions in capacity” on Friday, due to an “unforeseen equipment issue” with overnight paving work on its north runway.
The north runway typically handles 400 flights daily, and by mid-afternoon more than 150 flights were delayed and 25 flights cancelled.
The runway is expected to be closed until Saturday morning.
Global’s Troy Charles has more on how it impacted flights all over the world.

But did you die
Ppl cry about global warming but sure do love thier air travel
Yup. Keep building in Vancouver with no infrastructure lol. Good job eby
Look at all the pollution the planes cause
drink of shot of whiskey every time he says "unfortunately" lol
This isn’t a disaster it’s an inconvenience. With all the problems in the airline industry now I don’t understand why people are still so anxious to fly and don’t plan for an interruption or delay when they travel. Stay home and enjoy your own country if you don’t have to fly out of some necessity or for business. Once travel drops and airlines and airports start to feel the pain financially they’ll make an effort to improve but until then there’s no reason for them to even try. If you can treat your customers badly but you still have more business than you can handle why bother working at improving service.
Lmfao… first world problems 😂
Perspective, people. In the grand scheme of things, know your real priorities. Delays are annoying without a doubt. But they are hardly a disaster.
Typical inefficiencies at Yvr no accountability they don’t manage this airport well.
😅 Canada advertising church keeping people under control they told MacDonald to open jobs delivery 😅 we know all this program 😅
Surprised with the mispronunciation for asphalt
Someone has to come with a way to blame this on climate change !
Canada has gone straight down hill… no sense in even trying in a fake country.
I visited Vancouver in the first week of May, fortunately no problem with in and out flights.
Wow
Night is for sleeping not for working. ! 🎉🎉🎉
So much for the Airport Improvement Fee
HA ! HA ! … – NELSON MUNTZ
This is not YVR's fault, not by a longshot. The asphalt plant went down leaving them high and dry and they probably couldn't reopen the runway due to incomplete work. I imagine YVR paid the initial asphalt plant to supply a large order before they went down and had to make last minute plans to buy from another plant, farther away, possibly at the risk of the asphalt cooling down more than expected before it's delivery.
Like what @MapleMAGA1963 (not my choice of handle) says, this isn't a disaster, it's an inconvenience; your safety is not a reasonable exchange for your convenience.
Ash-falt really? You know it is spelled asphalt, right?!?!
Let me guess, your spelling was nukilar good in school.
You get what you voted for
Was there last week, flight from YYC to YVR was delayed after we taxied to the runway and then a week later flying back to YYC from YVR many flights were listed as delayed. The story we got from Westjet was that YVR is having issues with a shortage of air traffic controllers, they are short staffed and therefore were not letting all the flights land or takeoff on time. It seemed strange but you tell me.
Typical Vancouver incompetence. Just like every other simple task that can be performed but is f**ked up.
"Asphalt" and "concrete plant" are said here. Which one is it? These are very different things.
Concrete would unlikely be useable on the same day.
Where’s the connection to the Trump Presidency, Elon Musk, or a female politician that is improving this situation or battling a moral or political issue? Waiting for the propaganda framing.
Patiently waiting.
1:52 the horror of spending a night in Calgary 😱
First world problems
Issue number one is having Kiewit involved with any of this.
Go Trump! 🇺🇸
The one guy using a 4 foot level on a runway about 70 feet wide sums it up 🤣😂
Won’t see this in Japan as they account for possible delays or errors
Nobody thought about this in their risk management plan? Wow……
Passengers can make flight changes free of charge!!!
THANKS AIR CANADA…..😂
That airport looks like a public elementary school.
Sounds like they hired the wrong company
Wow no wonder we landed on other side yesterday, glad we aren’t delayed
When there was an issue with getting the asphalt on time they should have pushed back that night's work instead of adding 400 planes to the already full second runway.
only happen i canada lol
That's just incompetence on display. Fire the decision maker.
Let's keep it in perspective and stop catastrophising. Life rarely goes according to plan. Let's be mature about it and keep our expectations rooted in reality.
Uh oh!
this is plain dumb, no contingencies, project risk evaluation? when something goes wrong just everyone shrugging their shoulders, high time the airline industry takes ownership and accountability of their failures
Unfortunately things like power failures happen and people have to adapt until circumstances return to normal. Anyone who lived through the blackout will know that.
I do know I'd rather they take the time to do the job right than do a halfass job on the surface planes are landing on.
I’ll road trip on my motorcycle this summer instead.
My heart goes out to the lady who will miss her connecting flight to Barcelona. How terrible 🤣🤣🤣
Smart seems not so smart after all.
