These cyclone seeds could influence rainfall and trigger high sea waves in parts of Indonesia over the next 24 hours, the agency stated.
The three atmospheric disturbances—Tropical Cyclone Seeds RAGAZA, 92W, and 98B—were identified by BMKG’s weather satellite in the Bay of Bengal, located in the northeastern Indian Ocean.
BMKG’s Director of Public Meteorology, Andri Ramadhani, explained in Jakarta on Monday that Tropical Cyclone RAGAZA was observed in the Philippine Sea, east of Luzon Island, with maximum wind speeds of 100 knots (185 kilometers per hour) and a minimum air pressure of 925 hPa.
“Within the next 24 hours, Tropical Cyclone RAGAZA is expected to intensify into Category 5 and move westward, away from Indonesian territory,” he said.
Andri noted that RAGAZA’s indirect impact could bring moderate to heavy rainfall to North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and West Kalimantan.
Sea waves ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters are also likely in the waters around the Sangihe-Talaud Islands.
Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Seed 92W was detected in the western Pacific Ocean, northeast of Papua, with maximum wind speeds of 20 knots and a minimum pressure of 1,013 hPa.
This system has a low potential to develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 to 72 hours and is not expected to cause extreme weather in Indonesia.
Tropical Cyclone Seed 98B, observed in the Bay of Bengal in the northeastern Indian Ocean, also has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the same period.
It currently has maximum wind speeds of 15 knots and a minimum pressure of 1,006 hPa.
Cyclone Seed 98B may also trigger waves of similar height in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh and the northern part of the Strait of Malacca.
BMKG urges the public – especially fishermen, maritime transport users, and operators – to stay alert and monitor weather forecasts and high wave warnings to ensure safe activities.
