Federal election candidates are set to launch their campaigns across Canada this weekend as the country anticipates its 45th general election to formally get underway on Sunday. Prime Minister Mark Carney is yet to settle on the day but his recent social media post referencing a song by Blue Rodeo may offer a hint.
Chinese tariffs on Canadian goods took effect Thursday, targeting one of Canada’s most lucrative exports – seafood. With the United States, China accounts for over 80 per cent of all Canadian seafood exports, an industry worth nearly eight billion dollars in 2023. The impact is expected to be significant, with the Atlantic Lobster, which comprises the largest portion of the export market, suffering the most. Heidi Petracek has the story.

Regarding lobster (at minute 5:38)… I wonder if the Lobster Council of Canada would consider approaching all the provinces to encourage summer lobster festivals to boost sales and maybe even promote Canadian maple syrup products at the same time? And why doesn't the Lobster Council liaise with Ottawa to invite Chinese officials to Atlantic Canada to tour lobster production? The worst that could happen is they turn the invitation down. Maybe Ottawa could cut the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) tariff to 50% even if for only 6 months? Hon. Gerry Byrne, federal minister of fisheries (and from Newfoundland), still has a couple of days to contact China before the election call in Canada.
Carney (at minute 0:54)…great footage of Carney skating with the Oilers… I like his humility: “I didn’t fall down,” …lol…the video sure makes him look down to earth as a rookie candidate to head Canada. He is educated, bilingual, intelligent, calm and focused. He is what we need to deal with the economy and Trump. And for an election, I prefer Monday, May 5. The Easter long weekend (April 18-20) will be over, anyone who went away for spring break will be back home, there will be warmer spring time temperatures to get out the vote, and it gives all candidates one last weekend to finish campaigning. Carney has my vote.
Lastly, (regarding minute 5:05🙂 Poilievre refusing to let journalists travel with him on his plane/bus. Memo to Poilievre: Get new handlers. You are shooting yourself in the foot and creating the PERCEPTION that you have something to hide. We all know you are stressed and have lost ground against the Liberals. I remember a story when Stephen Harper was prime minister. He apparently told reporters on Parliament Hill that those who wanted to ask him questions had to write down the questions beforehand and then Harper woud tell them if the questions were “approved." If a difficult question was not approved, Harper told the journalist to not ask that question. If the journalist ignored Harper, he/she would be banned from asking any further questions. How’s that for transparency? P. S. Trump has said publicly in the media (March 18, 2025) that "The conservative that's running is, stupidly, no friend of mine. I don't know him, but he said negative things,” … and, "When he says negative things, I couldn't care less.” Trump said he would prefer to deal with a liberal. Would that statement get Careny to first base if he is prime minister rather than Poilievre hearing Trump say “I don’t want to deal with you?”
