Canadian MPs returned to the House of Commons on Monday as Prime Minister Mark Carney signalled the fall budget’s deficit will be bigger than last year’s — partly because of U.S. tariffs and the government’s response.
Budget issues, crime and affordability were key topics as Carney squared off against Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre for the first time in the daily question period.
Poilievre is returning to the House of Commons after winning a seat in an Alberta byelection last month; that follows a defeat in his longtime Ottawa-area riding in April’s general election.
Carney was also grilled by Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet over his handling of trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S., with Blanchet charging that Canada “is not coming out on top.”
Carney said Canada’s relationship with the U.S. “is good” despite “some setbacks.”
“But I am proud that this government stands up for Canada,” he said.
