FIFA has announced the creation of a peace prize, which it plans to award at the draw for the World Cup on December 5 in Washington.
The award, called the FIFA Peace Prize, will “recognise exceptional actions for peace,” soccer’s governing body said.
“In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it’s fundamental to recognise the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.
FIFA said the award, which Infantino would present this year, would be bestowed annually “on behalf of fans from all around the world”.
The US president has been outspoken in his desire for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Last month, he declared he had “ended eight wars in eight months” and regularly touted himself as the “president” of peace.
“The person who actually got the Nobel Prize called today, called me and said, ‘I’m accepting this in honour of you, because you really deserved it,'” the president said.
“A very nice thing to do. I didn’t, I didn’t say, ‘Then give it to me,’ though I think she might have. She was very nice,” Trump joked.
“I’ve been helping her along the way,” Trump added.
Infantino and Trump were both scheduled to speak at an unrelated event in Miami on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).
FIFA recently added another link to Trump by appointing his daughter Ivanka to the board of a $US100 million education project part-funded by 2026 World Cup ticket sales.
