Jakarta Marathon adds US.5 million to city economy, governor says
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta’s provincial government said the 2025 Jakarta International Marathon (JAKIM) generated about 85 billion rupiah ($5.5 million) in revenue across multiple sectors in the capital, underscoring the growing economic impact of major sporting events.

Governor Pramono Anung said the international marathon provided a clear boost to local businesses, particularly micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), hotels and related services.

“The most concrete example is the Jakarta International Marathon. We calculated that it contributed roughly 85 billion rupiah from MSMEs, hotels and other sectors,” Pramono told reporters in South Jakarta on Sunday.

He said the government’s assessment showed that, while international-scale events deliver the largest gains, locally organized running events also generate economic benefits, although on a smaller scale.

According to Pramono, revenue from local running events is estimated at about half of JAKIM 2025’s contribution.

He added that the impact of such activities was reflected in Jakarta’s fiscal performance, with tax revenue targets largely met as of December.

The governor said hotels and MSMEs saw increased demand during the marathon, with higher occupancy rates and stronger sales recorded in areas around the race route.

JAKIM 2025 attracted about 31,000 participants from Indonesia and overseas, a turnout that Pramono said demonstrated the event’s smooth organization and international appeal.

He said the influx of runners and visitors helped drive spending on accommodation, food, transportation and other services, benefiting the city’s broader economy.

Pramono said the provincial government hopes JAKIM can develop into a flagship sports tourism destination for Jakarta, drawing visitors, particularly runners, from abroad.

As part of that strategy, the Jakarta administration has formally positioned the Jakarta International Marathon as a key sports tourism event in the capital.

On Sunday, Anung also took part in the JEKATE Running Series 2025, themed “Explore the City, Own Your Flow.”

The event showcased distinctive running routes across Jakarta, allowing participants to experience the city through sport.

According to Anung, the initiative reflects Jakarta’s openness to hosting a wide range of running and sporting events.

He said running activities encourage healthier lifestyles while offering residents and visitors a way to discover different parts of the city in an engaging and active manner.
