Jakarta halts fast boat services to Thousand Islands on bad weather

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta’s transportation agency has again suspended fast boat services from Muara Angke port to the Thousand Islands, citing unsafe weather conditions, extending a halt that began earlier this week.

“Today, fast boats to the Thousand Islands from Muara Angke remain unable to operate because weather conditions are still not conducive,” said Muhamad Wildan Anwar, head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency’s Water Transport Unit, on Wednesday.

Fast boat services have been suspended since Sunday, Jan. 25, through Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026, and operations have yet to resume as of Wednesday.

Wildan said data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency showed wind speeds in the Thousand Islands reaching 11 to 15 knots, with wave heights ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters.

“These conditions pose risks to the safety of passengers and crew,” he said.

In addition to weather factors, the suspension also reflects the absence of sailing permits from the Harbourmaster and Port Authority Office, a mandatory requirement before vessels are allowed to resume operations.

“Services will reopen once weather conditions are declared safe,” Wildan said, adding that updates would be provided through official Jakarta Transportation Agency channels.

Four routes suspended

Separately, Water Transport Unit Supervisor Mulyadi said the suspension applies to all four main routes serving both the southern and northern areas of the Thousand Islands.

He urged the public to monitor official announcements on sailing schedules and prioritize safety while adverse weather persists.

“For passengers who have already purchased tickets, there is no need to worry. All fares will be fully refunded in accordance with the original purchase terms,” Mulyadi said.

Jakarta’s disaster mitigation agency has also reissued an early warning for potential extreme weather across the capital from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, 2026.

Based on BMKG forecasts, Jakarta is expected to experience light to heavy rainfall, which could trigger hydrometeorological impacts such as flooding and coastal hazards.

The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency urged residents to regularly monitor official updates, including water level data and flood information, through its online platforms and public information channels.
