amazing!
what a great song! heard the piece on NPR yesterday… inspiring story about this band, love that some recognition is finally happening for a band that was 1. talented and 2. had balls… SA was a pretty intense place to have an integrated punk band in 1979!
After I heard the NPR story about you I bought your album. If we had your album in 1980, you would have been huge in the U.S. I LOVE your music! Thank you- Tobylifehater.
You guys were the Clach for S.A.! 🙂 We love your music!!
Did these guys ever get to tour internationaly during their heyday? I agree, they're right up there with the Clash (and perhaps even the Jam, ftm). They certainly had the sound to break through to the big time. Geez, to put a band like that together in the midst of the Apartheid era??? 100% BALLSY!!!
>;-D
after a time lapse, National Wake are to get their USA and European release!
great song, great band.
The where very strong in a very difficult time. And their music was right up in time. One of the most powerful punk bands i ever heard.
These guys are truly amazing. Even though they were only together for a short time, they have made a lasting impression in the lives of many people.
Lyrics?????
thanks pitchfork
"Following the 1976 Soweto uprising, in which students protesting apartheid were murdered by state police, Ivan Kadey and brothers Gary and Punka Khoza did what countless others have done when feeling helpless and frustrated, in need of a voice: they started a punk band. They mixed Stooges-esque garage, the repurposed disco structures and acerbic political analysis of bands like the Pop Group and Gang of Four, two-tone ska, reggae, and African polyrhythms into one heady setlist. But more on the rowdy and raw hard-rock end of things, “International News” took aim at the role of the international media in perpetuating both apartheid and the atrocities of the Angolan War of Independence with sensationalistic reporting. Unsurprisingly, National Wake found themselves the subject of state police surveillance and censorship, making it difficult to secure spaces to play. The pressure eventually split the band apart, but they hadn’t been forgotten; preserved through tape trading and Kadey’s own record-keeping, their recorded material is now available in its original, uncensored condition thanks to Light in the Attic." – source: http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1460-a-history-of-anti-fascist-punk-around-the-world-in-9-songs/
Sonzeira do caralho! Esses caras são excelentes!
Came across from article about anti fascist songs from all over The World. This song is a winner -and no one can doubt their bravery either.
Does anyone have lyrics?

Legendary Punk Band
I can't imagine the difficulties and pioneering that this band had at the time. Here in Brazil, (perhaps the most multicultural country in the world) since the beginning of punk, bands with whites, blacks, asians and all kinds of nationality were the normal. Punk came from the periphery and nothing is more normal than the periphery of a multicultural 3rd world country being a melting pot of all peoples and colors.
There is a known story in Brazil of when a Brazilian team went to play in South Africa ins 50s and the players did not accept to be in separate rooms, being the 1st team to boycott Apartheid. Imagine the 1982 Brazilian team trying to separate white players like Zico, Falcão, Éder, Leandro, Óscar and Waldir from black players like Luizinho and Serginho, because they are black. If things like that were said to great sportsmen, imagine what it must be like for the common citizens of South Africa.
