Life on the colorful island of Java is dominated by the temperamental Kawah Ijeb volcano, the supply of life, and sometimes loss of life, on the island. Porters scale a drop of over 2000 metres to get to the centre of the volcano, the place they collect sulphur. They load as a lot as 80kilos onto their backs earlier than a painful trek again up the volcano. They cowl their mouths with scarves to attempt to defend themselves in opposition to the deeply poisonous fumes which burn the lungs and eyes. They’re paid in line with the burden of the sulphur they handle to convey. Two 80 kilo deliveries make for a again breaking 11 hour day and a wage of 8 euros. We meet the individuals who dwell and work from the volcano, who endure such harsh circumstances in an effort to feed their households and ship their youngsters to highschool, in order that they could have a greater life sooner or later. –

I walked up and down this mountain one night in March (just before covid lockdown) using the same path as these miners. The rule on the path is that hikers must always yield to the miners, for obvious reasons. The sulfuric gas can be overwhelming at times (depending on the thickness and direction of the wind), but masks help a bit. As for the miners, they are truly remarkable. It’s at least a 3 mile trek. The steepest and most treacherous parts (going down to the crater to get the sulfur) is crazier than it looks here. Slippery rocks and rubble, steep and twisted. Blue flames shoot out of the holes at the bottom of the crater, which is why people go at night. If you are ever in Banyuwangi, East Java and want to visit Kawah Ijen you can book a room at Jiwa Jawa hotel. They’ll drive you to the mountain (departing at around 1 a.m) and then drive you back in the morning. They even pack a decent boxed breakfast for you. Aside from the rock path down to the crater the hike is not too strenuous, though you should consider your footwear. And take your time. It gets busy, so you need to be conscious of others (who sometimes slip and crash). They also have rickshaws for hire, should you want to be carried up and down the mountain. Whatever you decide, you will see what is shown in this video (though the views in the morning are difficult to capture via camera alone). 🌏 🏝 🌋 🔥 👀

As ordinary people in Indonesian in another island , I feel very sad to watch this heartbreaking struggle for life…there has been many proposal to the local government to end this kind of unhuman jobs….but there has been positive respons yet. On the other hand this volcano in East Java has been a popular destination for backpacker tourists including from Europe, USA and the other werstern countries. Any solution?

The thing we fear the most is when our family at home can't eat. The wife does not have food and the children cannot go to school.
We try hard so that the family at home can continue to eat. And our children can go to school as high as possible, so they can get better jobs than us.
Living life is tough, but give up is not an option. 🇮🇩
