Trade mission expands migrants’ access to Europe: Christina

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Deputy Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Christina Aryani regards the trade ministry’s trade mission as a strategic step to expand service exports, especially for the placement of Indonesian migrant workers in Europe.

“It turns out that service exports are also a focus of the Ministry of Trade. We have agreed to collaborate on this trade mission,” Aryani noted in a statement from the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) here on Wednesday.

The deputy minister made the statement during a meeting with several representatives from the Ministry of Trade at the KP2MI Office here on Wednesday.

During the meeting, KP2MI and the Ministry of Trade agreed to collaborate on an overseas trade mission planned for August or September 2025.

As a follow-up to this agreement, a business meeting will be held to discuss sectors with potential for Indonesian migrant workers.

“There will be business meetings and presentations on potential sectors that could offer opportunities for Indonesian migrant workers,” the deputy minister, known as Christina, remarked.

Christina said her ministry’s current focus is on countries with demand for migrant workers from Indonesia, especially those with requirements that can be met by Indonesians, such as the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Germany.

“We will select the most suitable (candidates) to align with the job orders received by the Ministry of P2MI,” Aryani remarked.

She also plans to involve credible and experienced Indonesian Migrant Worker Placement Companies (P3MI) in the collaboration between the two ministries’ trade missions.

“We will involve P3MIs that have experience and are serious about opening up overseas markets in this trade mission,” Christina explained.

In the initial phase, the trade mission will focus on the hospitality sector, given the high demand for workers in this sector in Europe.

Some of the positions that will be offered include housekeeping, spa therapist, barista, waiter, and chef.

“The hospitality sector offers vast opportunities and can be a gateway for Indonesian migrant workers to work professionally in the global market,” Aryani remarked.

In the meantime, Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri stated that the collaboration aligns with the Ministry of Trade’s mandate to promote service exports.

The collaboration also opens up new opportunities ahead of the finalization of the Indonesia-European Union Sustainable Investment and Partnership Agreement (Indonesia-EU SIPA).

“We want to explore how the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of P2MI can work together to promote the services sector,” she remarked after the meeting.

Putri noted that the services sector, including the placement of skilled workers abroad, deserves more attention in Indonesia’s future trade strategy.

“We consider this collaboration as an important step in exploring the potential of Indonesian services in the global market,” she stated.
